China stocks rebound as chipmaker selloff lures bargain hunters; Hong Kong steady
Jun 9, 2026, 16:36 GMT+8

China stocks bounced on Tuesday, while Hong Kong shares steadied, as bargain hunters pounced on battered chipmakers following Monday's rout, with sentiment supported by an overnight rebound on Wall Street.
** The large-cap CSI300 Index 3399300 rose 1.9% while the Shanghai Composite Index 000001 gained 1.3%. Both gauges slumped to two-month lows on Monday.
** In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index HSI ended down 0.4%.
** Asia markets (.MIAPJ0000PUS) rallied after Wall Street saw some support from a bounce in technology stocks.
** China's stronger-than-expected trade data, and news that Iran and Israel had halted attacks on each other also aided sentiment.
** "Valuation and risks in AI stocks are rising, but we're not yet entering the 2000-style bubble burst,” Guangfa Securities said in a report. "The AI sector is being supported by real capital expenditure and profit."
** Some see the recent selloff in China's tech stocks as a good buying opportunity.
** Investor sentiment was also buoyed by news that ChatGPT maker OpenAI has confidentially filed for a U.S. initial public offering, joining rival Anthropic in a push toward the stock market.
** China's STAR Semiconductor Index (.CSI950125) surged 8% on Tuesday, while the CSI Semiconductor Industry Index (.CSI931865) jumped 6%.
** The CSI Artificial Intelligence Index 9930713 gained 3.4% and Hong Kong-listed chip-makers (.HSIT) also rebounded sharply.
** Investors largely ignored news that the U.S. on Monday added Chinese tech firms Alibaba BABA and Baidu BIDU as well as automaker BYD 002594 to a list of companies it believes are aiding Beijing's military.
** Energy shares in both China 000908 and Hong Kong (.HSMOGI) slumped as oil prices eased amid Middle Eastern developments.

Trump Says Peace Talks on Track After Israel-Iran Clash Ends

“We’re in the final throes of what will be a very, very good deal,” Trump told reporters in New York on Tuesday. “We could have at least an idea one or two days from now.”

The US president spoke on Monday hours after Iran and Israel agreed to halt strikes on each other following a flare-up that saw both countries launch waves of ballistic missiles. He has repeatedly spoken of an interim agreement to end the war that began when the US and Israel started bombing Iran in February

Does Broadcom's Recent Lackluster Quarterly Results Show a Crack in the AI Trade? Not Necessarily, But It's an Important Lesson for Investors

Artificial intelligence semiconductor giant Broadcom (NASDAQ: AVGO) saw its share price plummet after reporting second-quarter earnings for fiscal year 2026 that missed Wall Street's expectations.

It also triggered a major market rotation, as investors sold tech and piled into sectors like banking and healthcare. Broadcom actually generated pretty strong earnings results. But when expectations are sky-high, companies must surpass them if they want their stock to rise.

S&P 500 and Nasdaq close lower as chip stock rebound fails
Live updates

The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite dropped on Tuesday, even as oil prices pulled back, as a surge in chip stocks lost momentum after a one-day rally.

The broad market index fell 0.26% to close at 7,386.65, while the Nasdaq Composite moved down 0.97% to 25,678.82. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 86.10 points, or 0.17%, to end at 50,872.11.

The iShares Semiconductor ETF (SMH) shed 1% following a 6% rebound on Monday. The ETF had tumbled 10% on Friday for its worst day in six years as investors feared the AI-driven run in chips had risen too far, too fast. Micron Technology dropped 1% after Monday’s 10% comeback. The shares tumbled about 20% in two days last week, including a 13% rout on Friday. Broadcom, which had an equally steep two-day drop last week, fell 1% as Monday’s rebound fizzled...
