Rainforest Wild Adventure at Mandai fully open after launch of African-inspired zone

Visitors at Rainforest Wild Adventure can now catch a glimpse of the endangered okapi and other animals found in Africa as the second phase of the adventure-based wildlife park opened on May 29.Called the Rainforest Wild Adventure East, the 7ha zone marks the last major infrastructure development in the decade-long transformation of Mandai Wildlife Reserve, which spans 126ha, or about 176 football fields. The star of the new park is the elusive okapi – also known as the forest giraffe – an endangered species native to Congo in Central Africa that is making its debut in South-east Asia. The rare mammal resembles a cross between a zebra and a giraffe. There are four of them in the park.

Illegal miners extract billions in Amazon gold despite Brazil crackdown, Greenpeace finds

Billions of dollars worth of gold is still being extracted illegally from Brazil’s Amazon rainforest, a study by nonprofit watchdog Greenpeace found, despite efforts by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to crack down on wildcat mining.Mr Lula pledged upon taking office in 2023 to eliminate illegal gold mining from Indigenous lands and protected areas after years of expansion encouraged by far-right former president Jair Bolsonaro. In 2025, Brazil’s Federal Police seized a record 447kg of illegally mined gold. But as gold prices hit record highs amid intense geopolitical instability, the Greenpeace study found that miners have adapted by using permits from places with no mining activity to falsify the origin of illegally mined gold.

BYD debuts chip for self-driving cars it calls China’s most powerful

BYD, the world’s largest electric vehicle maker, has unveiled a series of technology advances, including what it calls China’s most powerful chip for self-driving cars. The semiconductor breakthrough steps up the rivalry with Chinese tech giant Huawei Technologies and is designed to allow BYD’s computer-assisted driving to stand out from a crowded Chinese electric vehicle (EV) market that includes rivals such as Xpeng and Xiaomi.Facing eight months in a row of falling sales and intense competition for more advanced charging and intelligent driving technologies, BYD is looking to spark more demand for its vehicles.

BYD shares rose as much as 3 per cent in early Hong Kong trading on May 29, before easing back slightly.
