The Hang Seng Index fell 255 points, or 1.0%, to 25,395 on Thursday, reversing earlier gains as investor sentiment weakened and profit-taking emerged across the broader market, with losses in financial and technology services stocks weighing on the benchmark.
The cautious tone came amid softer regional risk appetite following recent market advances.
In Hong Kong, Sany Heavy Equipment International dropped 9.4%, marking its lowest level since January 16.
Other major laggards included Tencent Holdings (-3.5%),
Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (-2.0%), and Meituan Class (-0.6%).
Despite the broader decline, electronic technology shares outperformed, rising 9.9%, with Sunny Optical Technology gaining around 9.2%.
Meanwhile, investors also awaited inflation data due today for signals on interest rates and global monetary policy direction.

Singapore stocks end higher amid mixed regional showing; STI up 0.02%
Singapore stocks ended higher on Thursday (May 21).
The benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) gained 0.02 per cent or 0.80 points to finish at 5,045.71.
Venture Corporation : V03 +2.5% led the gainers on Singapore’s blue-chip index, rising 2.5 per cent or S$0.43 to end at S$17.65.
The worst performer among STI constituents was Singtel : Z74 -6.37%, falling 6.4 per cent or S$0.32 to close at S$4.70. The telco had earlier posted a H2 net profit of S$2.2 billion, down 20.9 per cent from the year-ago period.
The three local banks ended higher. DBS : D05 +0.73% gained 0.7 per cent or S$0.45 to S$61.75, OCBC : O39 +0.39% rose 0.4 per cent or S$0.09 to S$23.33, and UOB : U11 +0.27% was up 0.3 per cent or S$0.10 at S$37.69.
Across the broader market, gainers edged out losers 315 to 285, after 1.8 billion securities worth S$2.6 billion changed hands.
Key regional indices were mixed. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index lost 1 per cent, Japan’s Nikkei 225 index rose 3.1 per cent, South Korea’s Kospi was up 8.4 per cent and the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI declined 0.5 per cent.
