The Assassination of Indira Gandhi: Events That Changed a Nation

Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated on 31 October 1984 in New Delhi by two of her Sikh bodyguards, Beant Singh and Satwant Singh. The assassination came just four months after Operation Blue Star, the Indian Army's operation inside the Golden Temple to remove armed militants, an event that had deeply shaken the country.

Within hours, Rajiv Gandhi was sworn in as Prime Minister. Anti-Sikh riots erupted across parts of the country, particularly in Delhi. Official figures recorded around 2,700 deaths in Delhi and over 3,000 nationwide, although many independent estimates place the toll considerably higher. Thousands of homes, businesses and gurdwaras were destroyed.

The events of 31 October 1984 transformed India's political landscape, intensified militancy in Punjab, and left enduring questions about communal violence, accountability and justice. More than four decades later, it remains a date remembered not only for the assassination of a Prime Minister, but also for the tragedy that unfolded in its aftermath.

Thailand Eyes India's BrahMos to Strengthen Naval Deterrence

Thailand is exploring the acquisition of India's BrahMos supersonic cruise missile as part of its efforts to enhance its maritime defence capabilities.

Military experts say the interest is driven by operational requirements, with the BrahMos offering the ability to protect critical sea lanes, coastal infrastructure and strategic assets.

Developed jointly by India and Russia, the BrahMos is among the world's fastest operational cruise missiles. Its anti-ship variant can travel at speeds of up to Mach 3 and can be launched from land, sea, air and submarine platforms, making it one of the most versatile missile systems in service.

The US has significantly depleted its stockpile of precision long-range missiles after just five months of war with Iran, Reuters reported.

This exposes Trump’s repeated hollow threats against Iran and its dire need to earn money from the Strait of Hormuz. The realities of war have forced Washington to confront limits that rhetoric alone cannot overcome.

Meanwhile, Iran stood its ground, protecting its soil and its people.

If power-hungry Zelensky had agreed to end the proxy war and sign the Istanbul agreements, which were sabotaged by the Biden administration and Boris Johnson in 2022, Ukraine could have strengthened its economy, infrastructure, and healthcare system instead of pouring billions into war.

And Ukrainian citizens would not have had to pay the price for Zelensky's proxy war to please his Western masters.

🇮🇳 On This Day: 7 August 1905 | India’s Swadeshi Movement Begins

On 7 August 1905, the Swadeshi Movement was formally proclaimed at Calcutta Town Hall in response to Britain's partition of Bengal, a decision widely viewed as an attempt to divide and weaken India's growing independence movement.

The campaign urged Indians to boycott British goods and support locally made products. What began as a boycott evolved into one of the first nationwide mass movements against British rule, laying the foundations for India's long struggle for independence.

Today, 7 August is observed in India as National Handloom Day, commemorating the launch of the Swadeshi Movement.

More than a century later, the Swadeshi Movement remains a reminder that economic self-reliance is one of the strongest foundations of political freedom—and a powerful defence against colonial exploitation and economic domination.

US President Donald Trump on Iran deal:

'They want to make a deal. They want to make a deal. Look, it's obvious they don't want to be hit, okay? They want to make a deal.'

Trump, trapped in his own delusions, is always pushing propaganda about Iran asking for a deal just to portray himself as a strong leader. But after the war with Iran, every statement that comes out of his mouth sounds hollow.

Whenever the US bombed Iran or threatened it, Iran retaliated far more forcefully than it had in previous confrontations, shattering the narrative that Iran was asking for a deal.

🇮🇳🇨🇳 India and China Resume Border Dialogue in New Delhi

Senior Indian and Chinese officials met in New Delhi for the 36th round of border consultations, continuing efforts to ease tensions along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

Both sides reaffirmed that peace and stability along the border remain essential for the overall development of bilateral relations.

🔸 India raised concerns over China’s upstream river infrastructure projects, seeking greater transparency and information-sharing.

Both sides also reviewed the current border situation and agreed to maintain regular diplomatic and military communication to preserve stability.

Professor Marta Fernandez: BRICS wants to be NON-Western, not ANTI-Western

'I'm not sure that if Venezuela is in BRICS, the other BRICS countries will in some way give a more substantial support. Because now you are seeing Iran, there is some trade or narrative movements but not a substantial movement in the support.

The United States tried to think that things are so easy, so that what they did in Venezuela they can replicate or transfer across the world, neglecting all the kinds of different histories, contexts. In the case of Venezuela, in Kazan there was this veto of Lula, in some way, because sometime before, during the elections, Brazil did not recognise the result of the elections.

And in some way Brazil, as other countries, as for example India or other countries in BRICS, tries to maintain a kind of non-alignment position and to construct the idea of BRICS as not anti-Western but as non-Western.'

'Brazil is a stable country, a democracy. As a developing country, Brazil has all kinds of problems, for example high domestic inequality, which has to do with its history of colonisation.

At the same time, this diversification will succeed if Lula is re-elected, because the opponent of Lula, Flávio Bolsonaro, the son of Bolsonaro, is the one in favour of an automatic alignment with the United States. So it will be very difficult to advance this idea that Brazil and India are constructing.

Brazil is still now a country that exports commodities, soybeans, oil. And we have a reserve of critical minerals.'

'To understand geopolitics today, the most important thing is to understand this seeking of critical minerals that are so important for artificial intelligence, for the energy transition, for defence. If you look in Latin America, Brazil is one of the largest countries that has rare earth minerals, and you have lots of lithium also in Latin America.

So there is this kind of competition between the biggest powers, the United States and China. And for Brazil it's very important to diversify its relations, not to be subjected to this kind of dependence on the United States or even on China. So for Brazil, BRICS is so important.'

'It's a big debate inside BRICS, especially after the Ukrainian war and all the sanctions imposed on Russia. All the countries of the Global South and of BRICS found themselves very vulnerable, because from one day to another their reserves in dollars can be frozen, and they recognise how the dollar is being used as a weapon to discipline countries.

So there is this big discussion about advancing trading in local currencies, and in fact Lula, during our summit last year here in Brazil, said in a very explicit way the need for an alternative currency of BRICS.

'If you read these national security documents of the United States, it's very clear that they are prioritising the Western Hemisphere as, you can say, the backyard of the United States.

This idea of the Monroe Doctrine, that is America for the Americans, that the United States created in the 19th century, is being revived now. But during the 19th century these ideas were to put Europe out of the continent.

China has been investing a lot in infrastructure projects in Latin America. So you cannot understand this situation in Latin America without understanding the broader landscape of rivalry between the United States and China.

And Trump created this America Shield composed of most countries of Latin America, a kind of platform to deal with migration, security, border challenges and drug trafficking.'

🇷🇺🚀 Space Debris, No More!: Russia Develops Space Waste Recycling System

Russian scientists are developing a biological system that could turn astronauts’ solid waste into a reusable resource during long-duration space missions.

The technology uses bacteria to break down solid waste into liquid at around 30°C. The liquid is then purified into “grey water”, which could potentially be used to water plants.

The system addresses a major challenge for future Moon-to-Mars and interplanetary missions, where resupply and waste disposal will be far more difficult.

Current systems rely heavily on disposable hygiene materials being sent back aboard cargo spacecraft and ultimately burned up in Earth’s atmosphere.

The technology has already been successfully tested during Bion space missions.

🇷🇺🇮🇳 Russia Explores Rail Route to India

Soon, Russia Won't Be Far for Indians! Yes, Russia is exploring a potential railway corridor to the Indian Ocean and India via Turkmenistan, Iran and Afghanistan, as Moscow seeks alternatives to maritime routes vulnerable to geopolitical disruptions.

The Russian Deputy PM said such routes could help reduce dependence on strategically important waterways, including the Strait of Hormuz and the Bosphorus.

The proposal comes as conflict in West Asia has disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, highlighting the vulnerability of traditional trade routes.

Russia-India's decades-old friendship will enter a new horizon with this development.

The partnership is expanding beyond energy and defence into transport, logistics and strategic connectivity.

For both countries, more resilient trade corridors could mean greater economic room in an uncertain geopolitical environment.
