On Independence Day 2025, the nation honoured 4 of its bravest sons with the #KirtiChakra, India's second-highest peacetime #gallantry award. 2 heroes were awarded for their valour in combat, and 2 made the supreme sacrifice.
Lieutenant Shashank Tiwari, 1 Sikkim Scouts (Posthumous):
A shining example of selfless service. Lt. Tiwari leaped into the raging Nimuphuichhu river in North Sikkim to save a fellow soldier who had slipped. He successfully pushed his subordinate to safety but, due to his own injuries and the fierce current, made the supreme sacrifice.
Sepoy Janjal Pravin Prabhakar, 1 Rashtriya Rifles (Posthumous):
In an operation in Anantnag, Sepoy Prabhakar tactically maneuvered under heavy fire to prevent terrorists from escaping. Displaying immense courage, he neutralized two terrorists before succumbing to a fatal gunshot wound. His actions were in the highest traditions of the Indian Army.
