Thread🧵: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh warns Pakistan on #SirCreek, saying, "The road to Karachi passes through the Creek." Intel reports a major military buildup, including 6 Creek Battalions, forward bases, and radar installations. Why does this 96 km creek matter so much?
Sir Creek is India’s longest territorial dispute with Pakistan, lasting 78 years. It separates Gujarat’s Kutch from Sindh and defines maritime borders. Pakistan fully claims it, while India advocates for a mid-channel boundary based on the Thalweg Principle.
#IndiaPakistan
HISTORY: The dispute began over firewood in 1908 and was formalised in the 1914 Bombay Resolution. The 1965 War resulted in India gaining 90% of the #RannofKutch through a tribunal, but Sir Creek was deliberately excluded.
On August 10, 1999, weeks after the Kargil War, an Indian Air Force (IAF) MiG-21 Bison intercepted and shot down a Pakistan Navy Breguet 1150 Atlantic maritime patrol aircraft over the Rann of Kutch region. 5 naval officers & 11 sailors were killed.
TERROR HIGHWAY: In 2008, Mumbai attackers used the Sir Creek by hijacking an Indian boat. The marshes in the area facilitate the smuggling of arms and drugs. Currently, 184 Indian and 103 Pakistani fishermen are jailed for “border violations”.

The last talks were in June 2012. There have been 12 rounds since 1969, but no progress. India wants a seaward delimitation first, while Pakistan seeks a full resolution. Environmental issues arise, as Pakistan's LBOD pollutes the creek in violation of the #IndusWatersTreaty.
Pakistan is building new forward military bases at Rah-de-Pir, 2 km from the creek, including hardened bunkers, offshore patrol vessels, and marine assault boats. This military build-up is to provoke an Indian response after facing military defeat in India’s Operation Sindoor.
Sir Creek is not just a swampy area. It’s a challenge of determination, planning, and control. With energy resources, key trade routes, and national safety involved, this 96 km stretch could shape the next important phase in India-Pakistan relations.

The U.S. approval to supply AIM-120C-8 and D-3 air-to-air missiles to Pakistan marks a significant shift in #SouthAsia aerial balance. India must strengthen its deterrence by fast-tracking #Astra Mk-II, fully integrating the #Meteor, or diversifying its allied options.
