The Indian Army has issued a tender to #BEL for 5-6 regiments of the indigenous #AnantShastra SAM systems, valued at ₹30,000 cr. This highly mobile system has a range of 30 km and will improve air defences along the Pakistan-China border. Approval came post Op Sindoor.

Artillery flourished under the Mughals in Delhi, Tipu Sultan in Mysore, and the Nizam of Hyderabad. At Kittur, Tipu Sultan even attempted India’s first enemy gun-location effort, a precursor to today’s modern Surveillance & Target Acquisition.

After 1857, most Indian Artillery units were disbanded, except for mountain batteries, crucial in the North West Frontier & Afghan Wars. The School of Artillery opened in #Kabul in 1923, with training centres later at Dehradun, Lucknow, Ambala & Mathura.

The modern Indian #SATA Gunner began in 1925 with “The Nine Originals” under Capt EB Culverwell at the #Kakul School of Artillery. By 1942, this nucleus became the 1st Indian Survey Regiment, marking a major milestone in the evolution of Indian gunners.
Only 3 Indians were first commissioned into Artillery from Woolwich: Prem Singh Gyani, PP Kumaramangalam & AS Kalha. They joined the A Field Brigade in 1935 at Bengaluru. Meanwhile, 5 (Bombay) Mountain Battery (1827) lives on, celebrated as #GunnersDay.
