In the 1950s, the American company Goodyear Aircraft, on its second attempt, succeeded in coming up with the idea of creating an inflatable aircraft, called the Inflataplan. The design involved a soft but strong outer skin and had to have a rigid connection to the main parts of the aircraft.
The engineers decided to use Air Mat, a state-of-the-art composite fabric for the time, which is now used in the production of trampolines. Despite the specific manufacturing material, Inflataplan fully met all the requirements for a fully-fledged pilot.
Such a small and compact aircraft could also be useful for military purposes, so it quickly received the support and approval of the US Air Force. ✈️
