The story of Wambui Otieno & Peter Mbugua:

Before the controversial marriage of Esther Musila and Guardian Angel, Kenya had already witnessed a similar headline-grabbing relationship.

Back in 2003, 67-year-old Wambui Otieno married 25-year-old Peter Mbugua, a union that shocked the country.

Wambui Otieno (1936–2011) was a Kenyan freedom fighter, political activist, and writer. She was even involved in the Mau Mau struggle.

In 1963, she married prominent Luo lawyer S. M. Otieno. They built a large family together before he died suddenly in 1986, leaving her a widow with several children.

But it was her second marriage that truly stunned the nation.

In 2003, at about 67 years old, the wealthy Wambui married Peter Mbugua, who was about 25. The 42-year age difference sparked widespread debate across Kenya.

Many people were shocked that a respected elderly woman would marry someone young enough to be her son. Critics questioned the relationship, while others defended her right to choose love regardless of age.

Despite the criticism, the couple went ahead with a civil wedding in Nairobi and remained together until Wambui’s death in 2011.

Sadly, after her death, family disputes followed and Mbugua reportedly lost access to most of her properties. At one point he was said to be living in a small bedsitter in Nairobi, far from the comfortable life he once enjoyed.

Mbugua has since remarried and is trying to rebuild his life.

What if I told you Kenyan prisons are home to some of the most beautiful women you have ever seen?

That is the story of Ruth Kamande, a soft-spoken, light-skinned, petite woman with striking looks and a calm, almost innocent appearance…the kind of person you would never imagine being at the center of a chilling crime.

Back in 2015, at just 21, she made headlines after ending the life of her boyfriend, Farid Mohammed Halim (the man on the right frame), in their Buruburu home following a heated lovers’ quarrel. Reports claimed that she dunga-d him 25 times, and Farid had injuries on his legs, chest, hands, face, and head.

Neighbors reported hearing screams starting around 9 a.m., and a witness said she heard Farid crying out for help: “Nisaidie, nisaidie, amenidūnga.” He pointed toward Kamande and said, “It is this one who has dunga-d me.”

Farid was seen standing, holding his abdomen in pain, begging neighbors to break the window or find keys to open the locked door. Witnesses observed Kamande actively preventing help from reaching him—blocking access to the kitchen while holding the knife.

As neighbors tried to intervene, Farid cried out that he had been st@bb3d again. The screams continued, shifting toward the bedroom. When witnesses looked through the bedroom window, they saw Farid on his knees, leaning on the bed, while Kamande stood over him, akiwa amekamata kisu.

Police eventually arrived and arrested her, and she was later taken to court. In her defense, Kamande claimed self-defense, alleging Farid attacked her after she discovered he was HIV-positive and that he had possibly infected her. The court rejected this, describing her version as an afterthought and noting that the excessive force used was not reasonable or necessary.

But here’s where the story takes a twist. While locked up at Lang’ata Women’s Prison, Ruth didn’t fade away. Instead, she rose to fame again—this time as a beauty queen, winning Miss Lang’ata and earning the nickname “beauty behind bars.”

And she didn’t stop there. Behind those prison walls, she went back to school, studied law, graduated, and is now helping fellow inmates with their cases as a paralegal.

From a crime that shook the nation… to a crown… to a law degree behind bars.

Ruth Kamande’s story is one of those that leaves Kenyans divided, with some people claiming she should be given a second chance.
