Mayor de Blasio was a passenger in a car crash; the NYPD covered it up

On a Saturday morning in August 2015, Mayor #BillDeBlasio was in the back seat of a black #NYPD Chevy Tahoe bound for an event in #Harlem when a driver changing lanes slammed into his ride.

No one was hurt, but the commanding officer of the mayor’s executive protection unit, Howard Redmond, was furious. Text messages show he immediately ordered the incident be covered up to protect de Blasio’s image.

“As per CO [the commanding officer] no one is to know about this,” Sgt. Jerry Ioveno texted members of the unit, referring to Redmond. “Not even the other teams.”

“No one is to know,” he repeated.

Cops cuff YouTube streamer after suicide threats in Downtown apartment

A popular video game streamer took to #Instagram Monday to live-stream an alleged threat to kill himself in his apartment #DowntownBrooklyn.

Daniel Desmond Amofah, known online as Etika, was taken into custody for allegedly threatening to end his life inside his Willoughby Street apartment between Lawrence and Bridge streets just after 1:30 p.m., according to police, who put the street on lockdown for an hour after the unhinged live post.

Amofah went on a rambling and bigoted social media rampage, tweeting “I fear nothing,” “f--- the Jews,” — which he later deleted — “f----t” and calling himself a “god.”
Due to a vehicle collision, expect extensive traffic delays westbound on the #BQE at Atlantic Avenue in #Brooklyn. Consider alternate routes and allow for additional travel time.

Apple Pay is coming to New York City’s MTA transit system this summer

It’s been nearly two years since we wrote that #NYC would finally be upgrading its transit system to take “tap-to-pay” contactless payments, but #Apple’s #TimCook says it’s finally coming true — on the company’s Q2 earnings call today, the CEO told investors that #ApplePay will begin rolling out to New York City’s #MTA transit system starting in “early summer” of this year, letting you tap a phone or watch to pay instantly.

But it probably won’t just be Apple Pay, because a few quick web searches show that NYC has actually already announced a specific date for a contactless payment system that should support other phone-based wallets (perhaps rival Android Pay?) and even contactless credit cards.
#Weather: Cloudy early, then May could bring showers (and fog). The high should reach the mid-50s.

Mugger Attacks 75-Year-Old Inside Bed-Stuy Subway, Cops Say

The elderly straphanger was attacked by a man in his 20s inside the Nostrand Avenue #ALine and #CLine train station on Fulton Street in #BedStuy just before 4 a.m. Monday, according to police.

The man began shouting at the 75-year-old, then pushed him into the wall, stole $20 and ran out of the station, police said. Emergency responders took the elderly man to Kings County Hospital to be treated for his injuries, said police. Police are now looking for the mugger, last seen wearing dark clothes and a white hooded shirt.
Anti-Semitic Hate Crimes Nearly Double In NYC | Patch PM

Hate crimes against Jewish people in #NYC nearly doubled in the first four months of this year as the city grappled with an overall spike in hate-fueled attacks.

The #NYPD had recorded 82 anti-Semitic hate crimes as of April 30, up from just 45 in the same period last year. Those incidents account for more than half of the 145 hate crimes the city saw in that period, which marks a 67% increase from 2018, police statistics released Thursday show.

The NYPD unveiled the new total less than a week after an anti-Semitic gunman killed one person and injured three others on Saturday at a synoagogue in Poway, California.
#Weather: Mostly cloudy, with a chance of showers (again). With temperatures in the 50s, you’ll need a jacket. Expect yet more rain over the weekend.

Force retirement: Brooklyn cop booted from NYPD, sentenced to prison for fraud scheme

This cop will protect and serve — a two-to-six year prison sentence.

A #Brooklyn cop was sentenced to a minimum two years in prison May 1 after using his dead mother’s name to enrich himself and horde narcotics in a more than yearlong fraud scheme that netted him nearly $100,000 in benefits, according to the Brooklyn District Attorney’s office.

Edward Ian St. Hill, who served at Prospect Lefferts Garden’s 71st Precinct, was booted from the force after pleading guilty to criminal possession of narcotics, felony larceny, and criminal possession of a weapon on March 29.
Disgraced: Judge hands former East Flatbush pol five-year sentence in embezzlement scheme

A federal judge sentenced a disgraced state senator to five years in prison for embezzlement, a sentence which will run simultaneously with the prison time he is currently serving for obstruction of justice and lying to the #FBI.

State Sen. #JohnSampson (#Democrat, #EastFlatbush), who had served as the #NYSenate minority leader and chairman of the Ethics Committee, was first found guilty in 2015 for stealing $440,000 while working as a court-appointed referee for foreclosure proceedings.

A judge dismissed the embezzlement charges at his 2017 sentencing because the statute of limitations had passed, but sent him away on charges of obstruction and making false statements to investigators.

NYPD cop loses control of patrol scooter in Manhattan

This cop may need a refresher course on riding a scooter if he’s ever going to chase down criminals on it. A video making the rounds on social media Sunday captures an unknown #NYPD officer in #MidtownManhattan struggle to get a police scooter moving before completely losing control.

The officer inadvertently guns it and slams into a cop car just a few feet away. Pieces of glass and plastic fly off the scooter, but it appears the officer is OK. The NYPD said it “is aware of the incident and it is currently under internal review,” but did not release any more details.
