NYC Weather: Rain To Soak City Before Sunny Weekend

New Yorkers are in for a taste of April showers. Close to half an inch of rain could hit the city starting on Friday ahead of a dry, sunny weekend, the #NationalWeatherService says. Showers could start as early as late Friday morning and will continue to threaten the city into Saturday morning, according to the weather service. The wet weather will come amid chilly temperatures with a high near 42 degrees in Central Park, the forecast says.

Get ready for a messy evening rush hour — the best chance of rain will come from 5 to 11 p.m. on Friday, the forecast shows.
Tractor-Trailer Overturns Causing Closure Of I-87 Stretch In Suffern

All lanes of #I287 in Rockland County have reopened following a single-vehicle rollover crash of a tractor-trailer. The incident took place around 1:59 p.m. Friday, April 5, northbound just prior to the split in #Suffern, New York State Police said. According to police, the driver "just lost control," and flipped the tractor-trailer over the center barrier.

"He was lucky and was not injured at all," said Trooper Tara McMormick. Although all lanes have reopened traffic is slowly getting up to speed following the closure and back-up, state police said.

Judge stops NY county from barring unvaccinated minors in public places as measles outbreak continues

A ban on unvaccinated children in public places in #Rockland, was put on hold by a state judge on Friday.

The controversial ban went into effect late last month in an effort to contain an outbreak of measles that began in October. Nearly 170 cases have been confirmed in the county.

Judge Rolf Thorsen scheduled a hearing for April 19 and said the county is temporarily blocked from enforcing the ban. "And petitioners' children are hereby permitted to return to their respective schools forthwith and otherwise to assemble in public places," he wrote.
Renowned architectural firm unveils large-scale BQE park proposal

A world-famous architecture firm has proposed to turn the #BQE into an ambitious 10-acre park on top of a capped highway, calling it the Brooklyn-Queens Park — or #BQP. Architects with the #Dumbo-based Bjarke Ingels Group on Tuesday released a plan — which they produced pro-bono — to build a six-lane highway along the back of #BrooklynBridgePark on Furman Street at ground level, and cap it off in order to build a new park on top.

The designers proposed to spare the beloved #BrooklynHeights Promenade and repurpose the existing cantilever into either a tiered park – similar to the “Tri-line” park idea proposed by Heights local Mark Baker – or demolish the two lower levels and recycle the debris into an artificial cliff side if the aged structure proves too expensive to retain, according to the firm’s planner spearheading the proposal.
42 Exposed To Measles At Nyack Hospital, Officials Say

#Rockland officials announced during a #Measles vaccine clinic that 42 people had recently been exposed to the measles virus at Montefiore Nyack Hospital. The exposure included 11 children, four pregnant women and 20 people with unknown vaccination status, said Rockland County Health Commissioner Dr. Patricia Schnabel Ruppert outside of the clinic on Friday, April 5.

She added that another seven people exposed were born before 1957. "Nyack has done an outstanding job of notifying those people. ... We are very grateful," Ruppert said. The hospital said anyone who may have been exposed has been notified.

Currently, Rockland County has 167 confirmed cases of measles and is under a state of emergency that went into effect on Wednesday, March 27.

Driver Struck 14-Year-Old Girl in Brooklyn, Then Fled: NYPD

#Brooklyn: A driver struck a 14-year-old girl crossing the street in #BoroughPark, then fled when a witness called 911, police said. The woman was driving a black Dodge Challenger on 47th Street in Sunset Park on March 27 at 4 p.m. when she struck the teenager in the crosswalk, police said. Video shows the girl was thrown into the intersection. The driver got out of the car to check on the girl, police said, but then fled when someone called 911. The teen was taken to Maimonides Hospital with bruising to her torso and leg, police said.
NYC Health Dept Orders Williamsburg Yeshivas to Ban Unvaccinated Children OR FACE CLOSURE

Yeshivas must exclude all unvaccinated students in #Williamsburg, the #NYC Health Department ordered on Monday. There’s been a school exclusion order in place since December 2018; unvaccinated students who attend yeshivas in the affected neighborhoods have not been allowed to attend school during this outbreak. But now schools face immediate violations or closures if they don’t comply.

Health officials say 465 #Measles cases have been reported nationally this year, as of last week. #NY accounts for a large portion of the outbreak. The measles outbreak in the Orthodox Jewish community in #Brooklyn is now at 285 cases since it began last October, according to Health Department data. Nearly all of those cases are children 18 and under. Measles symptoms include rash, high fever, cough, runny nose and red, watery eyes.
Deadly 'Superbug' Threat To New York Increases

An increase in life-threatening illnesses resulting from a deadly fungal infection has been reported in the #NY area. According to the #CDC, the number and type of clinical Candida auris cases in New York State alone is 309, as of Feb. 28. There are more than 100 in #NJ, and the CDC said that, as of March 29, the case count in the entire #US is 617. In 2017, the CDC said New York had 92 confirmed cases and New Jersey had 27.

The infection is caused by the yeast Candida auris, which can enter the bloodstream. This yeast is difficult to identify and is resistant to multiple antifungal drugs commonly used to treat Candida infections, the CDC said. Last year, a man at the #Brooklyn branch of #MtSinaiHospital, who was in for abdominal surgery, became infected with C. auris, the #NewYorkTimes said. While he died 90 days later, tests showed that the fungus was everywhere in his room, and the hospital had to use special cleaning equipment and even rip out some ceiling and floor times to get rid of it completely.

In 2009, C. auris was first described in a patient in #Japan. There is documented transmission of C. auris to U.S. patients from #HealthCare facilities in #India, #Pakistan, #SouthAfrica and #Venezuela.

Lyme Disease Sickens More In NY Than Almost Any Other State: CDC

#LymeDisease has infected more people in #NY than in almost any other #US state, according to government figures released as the latest tick season starts. The illness was confirmed in 3,502 patients in the state in 2017, the most recent year that the numbers are available. Another 1,653 cases weren't confirmed but are deemed likely to be Lyme disease. Only #PA and #NJ had more confirmed cases, with 9,250 and 3,629 respectively. Most states had far fewer – after New York, #WI was the state with the fourth most cases, with just 1,794, according to the #CDC.

The sickness is caused by a bacteria transmitted to humans by blacklegged ticks. Symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue and a skin rash. If it's untreated, it can affect the heart, joints and nervous system.
Earthquake Strikes 140 Miles From New York City

An #Rarthquake sent tremors across the seafloor just miles off the #NY coast Tuesday, Apr. 9, scientists said. The magnitude 3.0 quake was recorded at 6:22 a.m. 37.9 miles southeast of Southampton on #LongIsland – which is about 100 miles from #NYC – according to a report from the US Geological Survey. According to the Richter Scale, anything between a 3.0 and 3.9 is considered to be a "minor" tremor.

Early reports showed that three people on the island – two in Sayville and one in Rocky Point – reported feeling the earthquake, according to #USGS. There were no reports of the tremors being felt in NYC.

New York City Declares Measles Public Health Emergency In Select ZIP Codes

#NYC Mayor #BillDeBlasio declared a public health emergency Tuesday, April 9, in select zip codes in #Williamsburg, following a measles outbreak affecting the Orthodox Jewish community. As part of the declaration, unvaccinated individuals living in those ZIP codes who may have been exposed to measles will be required to receive the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine in order to protect others in the community and help curtail the ongoing outbreak, said the Mayor's office.

Under the mandatory vaccinations, members of the City’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene will check the vaccination records of any individual who may have been in contact with infected patients. Those who have not received the MMR vaccine or do not have evidence of immunity may be given a violation and could be fined $1,000.
80-year-old New York man arrested on charges he killed 2 young women in Virginia Beach in 1973

An 80-year-old #NY man has been arrested on charges that he killed two young women in a beach cottage nearly half a century ago in Virginia, police said Tuesday. Ernest Broadnax was arrested in #NYC on Monday and faces two counts of second-degree murder and one count of rape in #VirginiaBeach. The slayings occurred in the summer of 1973.

Virginia Beach police did not say how they linked Broadnax to the killings. They said their cold-case unit began to pursue a “strong lead” last year and sought out “advanced forensic technology.” Broadnax, who lives in #Queens borough, is waiting to go through extradition in New York, police said. It’s unclear if he has an attorney. For decades, the case haunted the coastal city in Virginia and the officers who launched the investigation.
State Attorney General Issues Alert On Scams As Tax Day Nears

As April 15 approaches, the #NY Attorney General has issued an alert regarding tax scams.

“Tax season is ripe with opportunity for scammers to prey on hardworking New Yorkers,” said Attorney General #LetitiaJames. “These bad actors use a wide range of tactics to illegally cheat residents out of their money, including individuals who impersonate the IRS and businesses that bait-and-switch their tax preparation services."

Rate Of 4-Year-Olds With Autism On The Rise In New Jersey, CDC Study Finds

The rate of 4-year-old children with #Autism is on the rise in #NJ, according to a new report from the #CDC. The study found the number of 4-year-olds with autism spectrum disorder surged by 43 percent from 2010 to 2014.

Researchers say the difference is likely explained by the availability of services in the state, which results in more accurate reporting. New Jersey has the highest autism rate in the country at one in 35 children. The national rate is one in 59 kids.

The CDC says early detection and treatment can help improve a child’s development.
