There is a lot of talk about why there are no protests in connection with Navalny’s poisoning.
Here are a few reasons why:
1️⃣ Firstly, while there is hope that Alexei will survive, a fatal outcome would obviously have a completely different level of consequence. In addition, the events surrounding the poisoning were drawn out and lacked clarity for a long time.
2️⃣ Secondly, Navalny is far from a hero of the people, at least for now. Over the years, the Kremlin has succeeded in creating a negative image of him as a pro-Western agent, a rogue and an opportunist. Navalny is also a controversial figure in the liberal camp. It is amazing that the fruits of his work have turned out to be much more popular and attractive than he himself has.
3️⃣ Third, Navalny is much more concerned about relations within the elite than between the elite and society. His poisoning certainly raises questions for many influential players. Even the FSB threw up its hands defensively, making excuses that it had overlooked what hapenned. On top of this, Deripaska postponed his lawsuit.
4️⃣ Fourthly, unlike Golunov, corporate interests are not affected here. For journalists, Golunov's setup became an attack on their "class". Navalny also does not need to be "beaten off", which could have been the case had he been arrested on serious charges.
5️⃣ Fifthly, no one in Russia believes in the possibility of an open and honest investigation. In addition, for Navalny's supporters, the culprit is obvious and the actual poisoners’ name, or even that of their boss, does not matter.
Protests could erupt in a worst-case scenario for Navalny, but something else is much more important here - a quiet indignation among the internal elite, which can neither be seen nor measured. Many conservative pro-Putin elite representatives have, to put it mildly, “freaked “out and some people, who are close to the government, are still shocked enough that they would rather believe in the involvement of Western special forces over the regime’s ability to poison opponents in this manner.
The use of Novichok as an argument in a political dispute will undoubtedly be read as a signal that the regime has begun to “crack”, since it cannot cope with routine political challenges using peaceful tools.

BREAKING. Maria Kolesnikova has been detained at the Belarus-Ukraine border after an apparent failed deportation attempt. Interfax-Ukraine is reporting that she tore up her passport, apparently to prevent this from happening. However, Belarus state media is saying that she was stopped as she tried to leave the country illegally.
Two other members of the Belarusian opposition - Ivan Kravtsov and Anton Rodnenkov - did cross into Ukraine. The Ukrainian deputy minister of internal affairs, Anton Gerashchenko, said the men were "forcibly expelled" from Belarus.
