🇵🇭🇨🇳 Philippines wants to start new energy exploration projects in South China Sea

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr said his country is working to resolve "exploration issues" in the South China Sea so it could start new energy exploration projects in the resource-rich waterway to meet his nation's energy needs.

The Philippines and China have resumed discussions about jointly exploring oil and gas resources in the South China Sea, where the two nations have sparred for decades over sovereign rights to develop natural resources in the strategic waterway. But "very little progress" has been made with regard to the talks, Marcos said.

"We are still at a deadlock right now," Marcos told media as he emphasized his country's right to exploit energy reserves in the sea at a time the Philippines wants to reduce its reliance on fossil fuel and coal and transition to liquified natural gas.

Indonesia and Japan have agreed on the removal of more trade barriers, Indonesia's foreign minister said, after the two countries concluded negotiations on protocols to improve their bilateral economic agreements.

Japan will allow greater access for Indonesian products including by removing tariffs on processed fishery items and the two countries will improve relations in the banking sector.

Indonesian side highlighted the importance of Jakarta and Tokyo's agreement on critical minerals as Indonesia tries to position itself as an important player in the global electric vehicle (EV) battery supply chain

🇰🇵 North Korea fires ICBM

North Korea fired an intercontinental ballistic missile on Monday that has a range to hit anywhere in the United States, said South Korea and Japan, marking its second launch in hours.

South Korea's National Security Council said it was a solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), labelling the launch a destabilizing act that ignored international warnings and multiple UN Security Council resolutions.

Monday's missile launch came after North Korea fired a short-range ballistic missile on Sunday night, flying about 570 km and falling into the ocean.

🇹🇼🇨🇳 Taiwan reports more suspected Chinese weather balloons crossing Taiwan Strait

Two suspected Chinese weather balloons flew across the sensitive Taiwan Strait on Sunday but stayed well to the north of Taiwan, the island's defense ministry said on Monday.

Taiwan's defense ministry said the two balloons were detected at 9:03 a.m. and 2:43 p.m. after crossing the strait's median 204 km northwest of the northern Taiwanese port city of Keelung.

The ministry's initial judgement is that they were weather balloons, spokesperson Sun Li-fang said.

🇯🇵 NATO delegation points to more ‘institutionalized’ Asia-Pacific ties

Last Monday, the ambassadors from the NATO countries – the US, Britain, Italy, Denmark, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Romania and Poland – met Japanese foreign minister Yoko Kamikawa, with the NATO partners saying the deepening of Japan-Nato cooperation was “natural”.

In the same press release Kamikawa was quoted as saying: “The security of the Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific is indispensable; therefore, coordination between Japan and NATO members sharing values and principles is getting more and more important”.

Nato’s cooperation with the Asia-Pacific region will be more “institutionalized” over time, threatening to have a “detrimental” impact on Beijing, analysts said.
