Report: Teams are doing research on Philip Rivers as a head-coaching candidate
Rivers would be the first post-merger franchise QB to become an NFL head coach.
[Schefter] Since the NFL started recording interceptions in 1933, no team ever has finished a season without an interception. The Jets would be the first if they do not get an interception today at Buffalo.

Official r/NFL Week 18 Power Rankings
Welcome to week 18 of the 2025 r/NFL power rankings, the most biased-unbiased source for power rankings on the web. As the 16th season of these rankings comes to a close, we'd like to thank you all for reading and engaging weekly with this project. As a collective we strive to make these rankings entertaining, informative, and accurate, and are always looking improving our processes with you in mind. The 49ers put up three points and fell by three spots, while no other team fell or jumped by more than two. The Rankers have Detroit in their top 14, and the Panthers are the only playoff team ranked 15 or lower- what are your thoughts? Is another Seahawks and Patriots Superbowl inevitable? After starting the season at 25, do the Raiders deserve the worst spot? Discuss! 31/32 Reporting

1. | (/SEA) | Seahawks | -- | 14-3 | Gloves off-- that's gotta be the easiest game vs the 49ers we've had in at least 5 years. Seattle completely dominated San Francisco in all aspects and the game never felt close. That being said, Seattle should have scored far more than 13 points, missing a couple field goals and failing to execute on other long drives. But it didn't matter. 3 points is the fewest total the 49ers have ever scored under Kyle Shanahan. Teams quarterbacked by Nick Mullens, Jimmy Garoppolo never performed this poorly. And all that credit goes to the insanity that is the Seahawks defense. Over their previous 3 games, the 49ers averaged 42.3 points, 455.3 yards, and 29.3 first downs. Seattle held them to 3 points, 173 yards, and 9 first downs. Any doubt Sam Darnold and the offense presents is washed away by Mike MacDonald's suffocating defense. I trust them to keep us in every single game, regardless of whether or not Sam Darnold sees ghosts. It'll be nice to have the week off as we prepare for the divisional round. Go Hawks.
2. | (/NE) | Patriots | -- | 14-3 | With the regular season coming to an end, it's almost mind blowing how much of a turnaround this franchise has undergone in a single calendar year. 2025 started with the Patriots fresh off of dismal back-to-back 4-13 seasons that each led to the firing of a head coach and their entire staff. Belichik's poor roster construction had finally caught up to him, and Jerod Mayo's attempts to steer the franchise in a new direction were feeble at best. Hope was hard to find in early 2025, and even the promise of an easy schedule had most Pats fans dreaming of an 8 win season at best. The addition of Vrabel and re-addition of McDaniels did help inspire a bit of confidence, but even the most delusional among us knew that this was likely to be a rebuilding year, that the massive amount of cap space meant that the talent on the roster was severely lacking, and that Maye was only in his second year and likely needed longer to develop in another new (and historically complicated) offensive system. And after Week 1, many of those fears were validated. The Patriots managed to lose to the lowly Raiders, starting fresh with a new coaching staff as well after their own miserable 2024 season. I'm not afraid to admit I was feeling pretty doom and gloom about the future of the team after that first week, but it didn't take long for Vrabel and Co. to shut me up. After another frustrating loss to the Steelers in week 3, New England ripped off 11 straight wins en-route to a 14-3 season that saw them tied with the Broncos at the top of the AFC and the division winner of the East. This has also been a complete team effort; the coaching is visibly improved, the rookie draft class has been phenomenal, the defense has become respectable once more, and most importantly, Drake Maye has gone from promising rookie to a legit MVP candidate in a single year. Whereas last year saw January bring relief that the season was finally ending, this year January brings the promise

of playoff football, at home, in a conference that has no true super-teams to stand in our way. And thus as the regular season closes, this might be the last ranking and last blurb I write for the Patriots 2025 season, but it isn't the end of their journey. Instead of seeing inadequate and dreaming of mediocre, we saw excellence and dream of glory in the coming weeks. Happy New Year everybody, and I hope you had as much fun reading these blurbs as I did writing them!
3. | (/DEN) | Broncos | -- | 14-3 | The Broncos stayed true to their identity and won ugly regardless of the quality of their opponent. This was perhaps the most boring game of the year, and led many fans to believe that the Broncos have lost the mandate of Blucifer. Other fans believe that the goal of the game, aside from winning to lock up the 1 seed, was to hide the playoff playbook and put nothing on tape for anyone else to watch. I think both things could be true, but I also think the Broncos are capable of anything this year. The signature 4th quarter heroics of this team will only get harder as the opponents get stronger though, which should ultimately end the super bowl hopes. If the team plays to its highest capability, it'll be really fun to see what happens. I am, as always, cautiously optimistic and ready for any outcome. The only part I'm struggling with is deciding if earning the bye counts as 'winning' a playoff game so I don't have to write that positive Raiders essay. I really, really don't want to write that stupid essay.
4. | (/LAR) | Rams | +2 | 12-5 | In a much needed get-right game, the Rams secured the #5 playoff seed and Matt Stafford solidified his MVP campaign. It took a half or so, but Sean McVay had the right level of aggression, and the offense finally found its rhythm again. While this game ended on a high note, the season certainly did not. The loss of key offensive linemen and Davante Adams, combined with poor DB play and untimely TE drops, have left this team feeling broken at times over the last few weeks. Reinforcements are coming though, as Davante looks like a go, but the TBD return of Kevin Dotson and Quentin Lake could be the difference needed for a deep playoff run. The Rams have quite the potential revenge tour lined up, with possible matchups against Seattle, Philadelphia, and San Francisco, all of whom have given the Rams heartbreaking losses this year. First stop, Carolina, with a chance to avenge the origin of their late season struggles.
5. | (/JAX) | Jaguars | -- | 13-4 | This team is fucking fun. Whoever lines up across from us getting their ass beat. Duval v. all y'all.
6. | (/HOU) | Texans | +1 | 12-5 | After starting the season 0-3, the Texans finish by going 12-2, including 9 straight. At this point, we know how this team is going to play heading into the playoffs, they are going to smother you with their defense and do just enough with the offense to hopefully eke out a win. Their games are often ugly but it's proven to be effective as seen over the past 9 weeks. With wins and close losses against many current playoff teams, they are one of the most battle tested teams in the playoffs this year. As long as they can get enough production offensively they can absolutely go in a deep run.
7. | (/SF) | 49ers | -3 | 12-5 | While losing the final game of the season and failing to secure the #1 seed feels like a failure, no one should overlook the job the coaching staff did this season. During a season that was slated to be a transition year both sides of the ball faced significant absences (which have been well documented) and still ended the season 12-5 and a playoff berth. Now the team enters the playoffs as a 6th seed, obviously playing with house money, but after the season they have had, you cannot count them out.
8. | (/BUF) | Bills | +2 | 12-5 | The Iron man streak stays alive! 140 straight starts by Allen is pretty impressive. Mitch came out cooking in this one putting up a 4 touchdown performance to close out the end of Highmark stadium to cap off a

dozen wins on the season. A 12-5 season would’ve won 4 divisions in the NFL but unfortunately for the Bills they’ll have to settle for the 6 seed. Next up is a wild card matchup against the Jags whose last loss was before Halloween. The Bills may not have the greatest seeding this year but one advantage they can exploit is their playoff experience as they are the only playoff team to have appeared in the AFC championship game in the last 5 years which they’ve done twice. It's time for the Bills to shock the world and become the lowest seed to win the Super Bowl since the 2010 Packers who also featured a MVP QB looking to win his first ring.
9. | (/PHI) | Eagles | -- | 11-6 | To sit or not to sit, that is the question. Whether tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of an NFL game, or to take arms against Josh Johnson, and by opposing earn the 2 seed. To play, to sleep. No more, and by a sleep to say that we end the season with the worst CBs the world has ever seen, tis a consummation devoutly to be wished, to rest the starters. To rest… perchance… to dream. Aye, there is the rub. For in the sleep of the banged up O line what dreams of a Super Bowl run may come? When they have shuffled off their pads and sit on the sideline must give us pause, there’s the respect that gives calamity of a long nfl season – okay yeah I’m losing the thread here. The Eagles rested their starters, which was a reasonable yet hotly debated decision that ended with the worst possible outcome: a Lions win and Eagles loss. Now the Eagles will face the 49ers as the 3 seed. Now, if they end up losing it won’t be because they rested their starters, it will likely be because the offense has yet to put together a meaningful 60 minutes of football. They end the season with one of the highest 3 and out rates of all time, one of the highest hitch route rates of all time, and a massive step back in the run game vs 2024. Can the defense and their red zone TD % save them? Maybe. Let’s hope their currents won’t turn awry and lose the name of action.
10. | (/CHI) | Bears | -2 | 11-6 | It was not a feel good final week for the Bears, despite landing the 2 seed. They were trying to win this game and came out sputtering, only surviving through red zone defense. They did manage to tie it late but in the end it was too little too late. But now a new season starts, as Ben Johnson put it, as they face a third matchup against the Packers in the most anticipated game in this rivalry in 15 years (for the third time this season we are saying that as well lol). This team is ahead of schedule, and it feels like you can call this year a success no matter what, but the opportunity in front of them is one they very, very rarely get.
11. | (/LAC) | Chargers | -- | 11-6 | On January 14th, 2007, the San Diego Chargers, coming off a magical 14-win season, allowed an underdog Patriots team with Mike Vrabel to go on the road and send them to Cancun in their very first playoff game. It was a standout loss filled with miscues and mental errors, even for a franchise plagued with embarrassment. Imagine how that type of loss would look on a franchise known for its success. 6,937 days later, the underdog Los Angeles Chargers have the chance to go on the road and end a magical 14-win season for a Patriots team with Mike Vrabel in their very first playoff game. 6,937 days later, the Chargers have a chance at vengeance.
12. | (/GB) | Packers | -- | 9-7-1 | I don't think I've ever been more apathetic watching a Packer game as I was this week. I don't even think it's a "spoiled Packer fan doesn't know how to handle bad QB play" situation, this has been even more extreme because basically every good promising player has been put on ice. There are guys out here trying to guard Justin Jefferson that I didn't even know existed until this week. Even some preseason games I'm watching looking for hidden gems that might turn into contributors for the upcoming season. None of the practice squad fodder they dredged up this week will play next game. This game will have
Maybe. Let’s hope their currents won’t turn awry and lose the name of action.

basically 0 impact on the rest of the season. Maybe Barryn Sorrell and Collin Oliver looked decent? That's all I got man. Clayton Tune should never play another NFL snap. But who cares WE'RE GOING TO THE PLAYOFFS BABY! ALL YOU NEED IS A LOTTERY TICKET TO WIN THE SUPER BOWL AND WE GOT ONE THIS YEAR LETS GET IT! FUCK THE BEARS! FUCK BEN JOHNSON! FUCK MIKE DITKA! FUCK THE BEAN!
13. | (/PIT) | Steelers | +1 | 10-7 | There is no better cure for low blood pressure than watching the Steelers play a winner-take-all game against the Ravens. There just isn’t. Those of you with an Apple watch or some other heart-rate-monitoring watch know the annoyance of receiving multiple notifications that your heart rate is above 120 and is “mysteriously” high for some reason. This is like when archaeologists find a phallic-shaped polished stone and say “uhhh...we're not sure what this was used for.” Games like this should have a surgeon’s general warning like a pack of smokes. It will kill you; just depends on how long it takes. Myself? I’m going to eat some humble pie here – I did not watch the final play. I couldn’t. I plugged my ears, closed my eyes and looked down at the floor. Only when I unplugged my right ear slightly did I hear Nantz screaming did I look up see he had missed. Was like hearing “that lump? Not cancer; it’s just gas.” And then, like millions of other fans, Steelers & Ravens alike, I had to try to go to sleep so that I could go to work for the full week since before Christmas. Thank GOD I have a cold and could justify taking NyQuil. Not that it helped. Why is this team like this?!? There had to be millions of people who turned their TV off before the kick and didn’t see the result. To top that shit-sundae off, apparently the ESPN app sent out an erroneous notification that the Ravens had won the North. In the body it explained that Pittsburgh won 26-24, but the title was incorrect. How many people didn’t find out their team was alive/eliminated until Monday morning?! Now what? That was it…regular season is over, and surprising ~~everyone~~ literally no one ever, Pittsburgh finished 10-7. It was more inevitable than Thanos. More predictable than a sunrise. That’s 3-straight 10-7 seasons. Based on how we played a few games this season, it was beginning to look like Tomlin was trying to see if he could have a losing season, but apparently, he just can’t. So once more a mediocre-looking Steelers team advances to the playoffs. But this time it’s a little different; we’re actually getting our star WR back for the Wildcard Round! He’s still a moron. We’re all still annoyed at DK; you can’t get rage-baited into a 2-game suspension in crunch time dude. Learn from your mistakes please. When I get unreasonably upset, I go out back and chop wood. Since I’m pretty out of shape it doesn’t take long to wear me out but that way I don’t do anything stupid. Just a suggestion… But this Wildcard game will be something Pittsburgh hasn’t done since the 2020 season; hosting a playoff game. You read that right; the Texans are coming to Pittsburgh for a playoff game. They have a stout defense that’s literally the best in the league in terms of yards and points allowed. Don’t love that. Can Pittsburgh get its first playoff win since prior to the release of the iPhone 8? When Ben, Brown, and Bell were still dubbed “the Killer B’s?” Guess we will find out Monday night. In the meantime, I’d like to thank the team for giving us another memorable season! Year-in, year-out, I’m always thankful to be a fan of this team!
14. | (/DET) | Lions | +1 | 9-8 | Jake Bates has rung the bell to conclude this rather tumultuous Lions season in victory. Detroit slipped past the playoff-bound Chicago Bears 19-16, in a game that would have been much more reminiscent of their week 2 encounter if the Lions could remember to throw the ball to resident TD machine Isaac TeSlaa in the redzone. Or, ya know, run David Montgomery up the middle in jumbo in short yardage situations. Jared

Goff was clinical in the chilly darkness that is a Chicago mid-afternoon in January, going 9-12 for 120 yards and a TD with a whopping +23.8% completion percentage over expectation under pressure (numbers courtesy Pride of Detroit). The Lions defense was clamps in the first half and overall, allowing 16 points and getting some key splash plays when needed—shoutout Avonte Maddox’s interception in the endzone and a Derrick Barnes pass breakup on 4th down. Overall, a wonderful way to end the season, all things considered. See y’all next year; forward down the field.
15. | (/BAL) | Ravens | -2 | 8-9 | After a season, and an ending, like that there's really not much to say. With that I'll leave you with a brief summary of my immediate thoughts postgame. "Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck"
16. | (/CAR) | Panthers | -- | 8-9 | THE PANTHERS ARE NFC SOUTH DIVISION CHAMPIONS! Wow. We are definitely a team that gets into the playoffs by another team winning rather than win the ones that matter but I won’t apologize for winning the division. What an insane weekend. The Panther Bucs game was maybe the worst ref job I’ve ever seen but that’s all I’m going to say on that. I’ve tweeted and complained about it enough with the reality being, we should have played better and not been in a position where the refs can influence the game that much. Ok done with that. The game was overall ugly. The run game was non-existent. Rico did hit his $1 mil incentive with reaching 1350 scrimmage yds but that was the only highlight. On the other hand, the pass game was up and down. Bryce played well and was slanging that thang to the entire team with nine different players getting a reception. Tremble and Coker each had a TD and Coker had a solid game along with a highlight catch for his score. The defense isn’t the issue on this team and that is clear. Obviously we lost but the defense was and is trustworthy for the most part. No complaints with where they are at. The play calling was iffy for sure but that’s kind of normal right? A bad flea-flicker call that resulted in a lost fumble really makes you wonder what is he seeing that I’m not but the men-in-black light just flashed and Panthers won the division so who cares? Huge shoutout to the Atlanta Falcons because literally without you, the Panthers would not be in this position in many ways. Next week, Bank of America Stadium hosts the Los Angels Rams for the first home playoff game in 10 years. What a crazy season. A true rollercoaster with plenty of ups and downs and now we get at least one more game. Win or go home. This is what everyone plays for and dreams about. Maybe the Panthers can shock the world one more time. KEEEEEEEEEP POUNDING!!!!
17. | (/MIN) | Vikings | -- | 9-8 | Well that had to be one of the least satisfying five-game winning streaks in NFL history. The Vikings somehow finished the season with the 3rd-best defense by both EPA/play against and DVOA after holding Clayton Tune to -7 net passing yards and the Packers to just three points. Bit of a pyrrhic victory though, as McCarthy left the game with somehow another injury. The flashes with McCarthy have been enticing -- he finished the season 2nd in big-time throw rate per PFF and (small sample size alert) over his last four games finished 4th-best in EPA/play. All he has to do now is completely rework his mechanics, stop panicking under pressure and stop being made of glass. With Kevin O'Connell and the Vikings' offensive talent, it might be possible. But with the Vikings' roughly $40M over the cap heading into 2026 and Brian Flores potentially out the door, it's also entirely possible the wheels start falling off.
18. | (/ATL) | Falcons | +2 | 8-9 | The day started with a Saints win and ended with Raheem getting fired. There's no telling how successful the next year will be, especially if Matt Ryan moonlights at CBS, but Sunday was a good day.

want to be funny, I wanna touch on million little things that happened in the season. In week 1 I made a "The Tampa Bay Buccaneers experience" type of "meme" about our game with the Falcons. I felt it was appropriate to remake the same thing as a way to end the season. Thanks to every person who's reading these blurbs. Let's hope by the time you read this blurb Todd Bowles is fired. 20. | (/IND) | Colts | -2 | 8-9 | GM Chris Ballard is 70-78-1 in his nine seasons with the Colts. Indy has gone 1-2 in the playoffs during that time and has never won the AFC South. Coach Shane Steichen is 25-26 in his three seasons. He has not made the playoffs. Both Ballard and Steichen will return next season, presumably because the Irsay family loves making excuses and hates winning. (Remember, Andrew Luck retired seven seasons ago. How was Ballard supposed to overcome that so quickly?!) Now, this outcome was all but assured once the Colts traded their next two first-round picks for Sauce Gardner, as no quality GM candidate would be enticed by a team with a question mark at QB and no first-rounders in back-to-back drafts. But fans are still right to be dubious of the plan to run things back with (likely) a QB coming off a torn Achilles and zero pass rush on the other side of the ball despite the number of high draft picks poured into the D-line. Here's hoping free agency brings some answers…
21. | (/DAL) | Cowboys | -2 | 7-9-1 | It’s over. It’s finally over. The season is done, Eberflus is gone, and we can hope again. New coaches will be hired on defense, and while I have my opinions on some candidates, nearly all of them are better than Flus. It’s sad that his wheels fell so completely off. Once upon a time, we were sad to see him go, but not this time.
22. | (/CIN) | Bengals | -- | 6-11 | Did I ever tell you what the definition of insanity is? Insanity is doing the exact same fucking thing over and over again, expecting shit to change. That is crazy. And the first time I heard that about the Bengals, I don’t know, I thought people were exaggerating. Being dramatic. Cynical. But then it kept happening. Everywhere I look, every season, every regime, every “fresh start” at the beginning of the year, it’s the same thing. The same fucking excuses. The same half measures. The same insistence that this time it’s different. No, no, no, please, this time they’ve figured it out. We’ve figured it out finally. This time meaningless victories in January are proof of progress instead of a warning sign. And you want to believe it. You really do. Because believing is easier than accepting what’s right in front of you. But then April comes. And September. And December. And you realize you’ve seen this movie already. They’re not committed to winning, they’re committed to the appearance of trying. Just enough effort to avoid change. Just enough competence to keep the cycle alive. They win when it hurts them most, lose when it doesn’t matter, and call it professionalism. And when you point this out, they look at you like you’re the crazy one. Like you’re the problem for noticing the pattern. Like you’re wrong for asking why a team with nothing to gain keeps choosing the same path that’s led nowhere for decades. The thing is, I’ve watched this already. I’ve lived this already. Over and over and over again. And it’s not insane to say it anymore. It’s just honest. So yeah. Maybe this is the last week of the season. Maybe it’s just one more meaningless game. But don’t ask me to pretend it’s different. Because this isn’t about one Sunday, or one win, or one bad draft pick. It’s about the choice they make every year when the stakes disappear. When there’s nothing left to chase, they don’t tear it down, don’t get honest, don’t commit to anything. They just keep going. Same decisions, same logic, same belief that standing still counts as progress if you don’t look too closely. They’ll say you never stop trying to win. They’ll say it’s about pride, about standards,
