Lincoln Police Capt. Mayde McGuire and her partner were fishing at Nebraska’s Pawnee Lake while their 2-year-old daughter was reportedly left alone in a locked, non-running van with the windows up for at least 28 minutes.
Bystanders heard the little girl screaming, saw her banging on the window and called 911. McGuire removed her before deputies arrived. Authorities say McGuire’s preliminary breath test registered 0.108.
Both women were cited for misdemeanor child abuse, and McGuire was placed on leave.
A police captain should understand better than most how quickly a locked vehicle can become deadly. Thank God those strangers paid attention and called for help. This story could have ended very differently.
