New York Governor Kathy Hochul has announced that she will sign the Medical Aid in Dying Act, a law legalizing physician-assisted suicide for terminally ill people with a prognosis of six months or less to live, provided it is confirmed by physicians and psychologists, with a waiting period and other formal conditions.
New York Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan and the bishops of New York State wrote in response that they were "extremely disturbed" by the announcement, adding that the passage of such a law "signals our government's abandonment of its most vulnerable citizens
Society should first strengthen palliative care, psychological support and dignity of all life, avoiding indirect pressure on the vulnerable.
