"The question should never be whether a nation will survive or not, but always: how will we nurture our nation? A nation that is growing will survive on its own."

"You, the leftists and rightists, are nurturing the branches; we, the Nationalists, are nurturing the trunk, and we want to make it so strong and sturdy that even you yourselves could hold on to it. We won’t feel envious of that; but you, after all, have never been and will never be the trunk. We call our politics realistic, while yours is a dream; and we call you yourselves “crack-peepers,” who look at life only through the crack you have created for yourselves, or with your eyes fixed on the ground at your feet, completely oblivious to how life unfolds."

Today, the homeland has bestowed
a wreath of honor upon its hero.
The night has passed;
The hope of rebirth
Spreads throughout our Lithuania,
Where bright young sisters,
Where poor mothers
From Vilnius to Courland and Prussia!
Šiandieną tėvynė didvyriui tėvynės
Uždėjo vainiką garbės.
Nuslinko naktis;
Atgimimo viltis
Teeina po Lietuvą mūsų,
Kur skaisčios sesutės,
Kur vargšės motutės
Nuo Vilniaus lig Kuršo ir Prūsų!

"A nation, like a spirit, like a spiritual principle that reaches with its roots into the depths of a rich past and is grounded in a living and active present, is not a makeshift creation, but the result of long and persistent struggles, efforts, and sacrifices. The nation of the present is the product of the experiences, sufferings, and achievements of the nation of the past. A heroic past, illuminated by the sun of glory from great events, focused in valiant campaigns, and crowned by the powerful will, self-sacrifice, and love of generations, social classes, individuals, and leaders, forms the social foundation upon which the national idea rests, expands, and grows. Recognition of the universal and glorious honor of the past, combined with the collective will of the present, is an essential condition for the nation’s creative vitality and unity."

"Our geographical position has imposed special responsibilities upon us. We serve as intermediaries between East and West. Caught between two distinct cultures, we must preserve our own distinctiveness. The emerging Lithuanian intellectual will be exposed to both cultures, but must not be influenced by them.
Our national characteristics, forged over the centuries, have remained alive and authentic to this day. The traditions of our forefathers, our customs, our emotions, and our aspirations have remained purely our own and distinctly Lithuanian.
Admittedly, our distinctiveness has been somewhat diminished by the political invasion of our neighbors, but their influence was largely external in nature, while the nation’s inner values have remained pure in the depths of the peasants’ souls. Now the time has come to declare our true values to the world.
Everything that is dear to us was hidden from our enemies in the depths of our souls. The true meaning of our hard-won freedom lies in the fact that our national characteristics - our true and eternal self - must henceforth neither be suppressed nor concealed, but triumphantly respected and cherished by all. Our national characteristics, our eternal soul, and our strongest bond of unity are the Lithuanian spirit that has survived in our blood."

"Utopian dreams, internationalist promises, and cosmopolitanism enticed and captivated many. After all, the masses love to be enticed. Loud, resonant slogans attract young people. Therefore, it is only natural that, especially during parliamentary elections, those who promised the most would win. The seeds of anarchism had by then deeply penetrated the fabric of our nation and severely undermined our national enthusiasm.
In the future, the doctrine of our nation and state must free itself from all cosmopolitan ideas. Whether internationalism is imported in the form of Marxism or communism, it will always be alien to us and disastrous. Our national and state existence, as well as our self-respect, forbid us from bowing down before them.
Our nation’s unique culture must arise and manifest itself from within our own ranks, and only then can it be of benefit to us. Our cosmopolitan complacency - and, you will find, the weakening of our national identity in the past - has brought upon us severe and prolonged suffering and penance. Now our anxiety and the Poles’ hostility are understandable and easily explained. Our weakness at that time worked to their advantage."

"Our national doctrine, in cultivating its own distinct character, must first and foremost rid itself of everything that is not its own, everything that is foreign. For example, the aristocratic arrogance, idleness, and revelry that were in vogue among the Slavic nations in the nineteenth century have, without our realizing it, infected us as well. We must bid a final farewell to the pretensions and ill-suited remnants of the nineteenth century.
Our older intellectuals, who were educated in Russian or Polish schools, still cannot come to their senses even today, and for the most part, they are still incapable of thinking in Lithuanian. The nostalgia in their souls, like a kind of neurosis, constantly draws them into all sorts of ventures and grand ambitions. They still cannot get used to making do with a small salary; they cannot do without lavish parties; they still do not know how to enjoy themselves in a civilized manner; they get drunk and go wild, like cobblers, after downing “do zelionavo zmeja.” Their peculiar foolishness and pride have overshadowed their Lithuanian modesty and thrift.
Now you can understand why the younger generation grumbles and won’t settle down, seeing all this and mocking it. Without delay, we must shake off these Slavic remnants..."
Jie dar neįpranta menku atlyginimu pasitenkinti, jie negali be triukšmingų pokylių apsieiti, jie dar nemoka kultūringai linksmintis, jie pasilsi ir pradžiunga, kaip batsiuviai, nusigėrę „do zelionavo zmeja."

"The pure-blooded Lithuanian intellectuals will be thrifty in the Western sense, because deep in our souls, in the character of our parents, there is a custom - rooted for centuries - of living frugally and fearing debt as one fears fire. Even before the Great War, the Poles, as a people, held the Lithuanians in high regard and would often say, “litwin chciwy alie poczciwy” (A Lithuanian is greedy but honest). Alongside other traits of our character, our modesty is very natural and unique. There is a deeply romantic love for one’s neighbor, heartfelt hospitality, and so on. Tumas Vaižgantas put it beautifully when he said that a Lithuanian, while sometimes appearing rough around the edges and lacking in outward refinement, reveals - once you peel away that rough bark - a true European, in the positive sense of the word.
If you look around the most ancient corners of Lithuania, you will quickly notice the pure spirit of aristocracy in our elders. The sincere tone of their voices, like the chords of a harp, caresses your heart. From them emanates noble truth, a hunger for the common good, and a harmonious and majestic spirit. In Suvalkija, around Griškabūdis and Sintautai, you’ll find the natural and original Suvalkian type, almost untouched by outside influences. Around Telšiai and Plungė, the Samogitians of the purest blood are also, in their own way, modest, noble, and honorable. But perhaps the gentlest of all, as pure as children and full of inner beauty, are the Aukštaitians living around Pasvalys and Linkuva. There, the simple beauty of the soul found in almost all the villagers is old-fashioned, original, and majestic."

"Today, our nation is striving with great determination to liberate enslaved Vilnius. But is the task of preserving Lithuanian identity in that land - where 700 years ago our forefathers perished defending their homeland against the invading might of the Teutonic Knights - any less daunting? That land is Prussian Lithuania." <...>
<...> "In light of all this, it is very important that our nation maintain as lively and close a relationship as possible with those Lithuanians in Prussia who, undeterred by the harsh living conditions, continue to work in that land today, mustering all their strength. Let us encourage them with all our goodwill and support them as much as we can, trusting that justice will one day prevail over injustice in that land. We ourselves must always be devoted to all that is bright, just, and good."

"In the name of national culture and racial preservation, we must continue to wage not only the battle for national and civic-political revival within our own minds, but also the battle for external national freedom in our surroundings: here, our goal is to win over the city, liberate the region’s capital, and Lithuanize the region’s ethnography. Only then will the aforementioned premature and unhealthy excess and proletarianization of our intelligentsia be eliminated; only then will our Lithuanian city, with a healthy and prosperous national bourgeoisie, form an unshakable and reliable foundation for the state and culture. We will all agree that in this universal work of creating national culture, the principle of nationality must take precedence; the national element must be upheld everywhere, and the foreign element must be suppressed."

"It is widely known that every nation is characterized by a certain uniqueness of blood. A nation, just like a family, draws a person into unbroken blood ties. But this represents only the outward aspect of national solidarity. In reality, this interaction deeply affects our psyche, our emotional and instinctual life, and our thoughts. Every nation constitutes a distinct psychological world: it exists on a wholly unique plane of psychological vitality, which acts almost of its own accord and often reaches members of the same nation even without external mediation, but which can never be fully experienced by foreigners. Our psychological interaction with our compatriots is much closer, more vivid, and more conscious than with people of other nations. But even deeper than psychological interaction lies the communion of the nation’s spirit and soul. Every nation is characterized by a unique light of spirit and soul, a unique vitality of consciousness, and a unique humanity. This manifests itself in the fact that, from time to time, a special movement of devotion and self-sacrifice arises within the nation."

"Nationalism, in essence, is a dynamic process, and only in this case is the dynamic spirit of religion always in harmony with the dynamic, ideal national movement. Fascism, understood as that dynamic, ideal national movement, is characterized by the fact that it has no static forms. In other words, fascism is dynamic even in its forms. From this dynamic aspect of it arises ideal tolerance, which, as we have mentioned, is dynamic in nature; moreover, one might say that this ideal tolerance is the dynamic spirit of all forms of religion and idealism. And fascism, while dynamic in nature even in its forms, has as its specific distinguishing feature an ideal tolerance of a dynamic nature. Through this ideal tolerance, it coincides both with the general idealism of humanity and with the religious spirit inherent in the Christian religion and ethics. <...>
<...> It is now sufficiently clear that, in order to achieve a perfect relationship between religion and nationalism, it is important that every religious form correspond to the character of the individual or the nation. In other words, the statism of religion or idealism, corresponding to the static side of the human being - to human statism - creates one another.
Christianity is a form of religion that corresponds to the Lithuanian character. Therefore, the ideology of the Nationalists is grounded in Christian ethics."
