An Effective Teacher

A effective teachers present a strong case for student / learner-centered education. They advocate a philosophy of teaching in which students are given a far more important role in curriculum decisions than has traditionally been the case.

Research indicates that apart from the personal qualities which encourage effective teaching, there are three other teacher characteristics namely: knowledge, organization and clarity, and warmth and enthusiasm which affect teaching. Let us discuss them briefly.

(i) Teacher's Knowledge:
Teachers who are firmly rooted in their subject knowledge make clearer presentations and recognize students' difficulties readily. They can handle the queries of their students effectively. Also, apart from knowing the subject content, a teacher to be effective should know how to translate this knowledge into an appropriate curriculum of assignments, tests, games, lessons, demonstrations, etc. He \she should be able to undertake application-oriented teaching as well.

(ii) Organization and Clarity:
Recent studies confirm the importance of organization and clarity. The organization is reflected in arranging concepts and content to be taught in a systematic and orderly fashion to enable students to understand it better. The attempt is to create concept hierarchies that promote learning. Teachers who provide clear presentations and explanations tend to have students who learn more and also rate their teachers more positively. Teachers who are clear are specific and precise and not vague. They project clarity of thought and an unambiguous vision which makes their teaching more effective.

iii)Warmth and Enthusiasm:
Teachers who are warm and friendly inspire and instill positive attitudes and a love for learning in their students. Such teachers are known to be more effective in terms of students' increased attention, achievement, willingness to learn, and favorable attitude towards the content. Positive traits of your personality will make you an effective teacher.
