Explanation
Altiplanation is the name proposed by Eakin (1916) on the basis of work in Alaska, for the formation of a subhorizontal land form at relatively high altitudes by solifluction and related processes of freeze and thaw in subpolar latitudes or high elevations. An altiplanation terrace is one forming on a slope. Evidently no former base level is involved, as would be the case in marine, lacustrine or fluvial terraces. Cairnes (1912) used the term equiplanation for the same concept, and Bryan (1946) preferred cryoplanation as a more general form. In each case, a reduction and flattening of the landscape by solifluction processes is implied.
