Fareed Ayaz and Abu Muhammad are best known for Qawwali, specifically the classical South Asian Sufi qawwali tradition.

Their style is a little more nuanced than just “qawwali,” though. They belong to the Qawwal Bachchon ka Gharana of Delhi, one of the oldest hereditary qawwali lineages, associated with the tradition of Amir Khusrau. Their performances often combine Sufi poetry with strong elements of Hindustani classical music, including raag-based melodic development, intricate vocal improvisation, rhythmic clapping, harmonium, tabla/dholak, and call-and-response between the lead singers and chorus.

A distinctive part of their repertoire is that they don't restrict themselves to only devotional Urdu qawwali. They sing poetry in Persian, Urdu, Hindi/Hindavi and Punjabi, including works associated with Amir Khusrau, Rumi, Bulleh Shah and other Sufi poets. Some performances can begin almost like a classical recital—slow, meditative and highly melodic—and then gradually build into the ecstatic, repetitive intensity normally associated with qawwali.

So if you're trying to describe their music precisely, I'd call it “classically rooted Sufi qawwali, in the Delhi Qawwal Bachchon tradition.”
