The goddess of women, marriage, and childbirth, she was known by the Romans as Juno. Homer gave Hera the epithet “ox-eyed” because of her large full eyes and described her as tall and striking. Hera was both sister and wife of Zeus, with whom she reigned on Mount Olympus.
The women of Greece prayed to Hera for protection during childbirth, good health, and to aide them in their marriages. She also had power over the skies and could bless the people with clear skies or curse them with storms. Hera was the daughter of Cronus and Rhea, the king and queen of the Titans.
