The Maidan Diary of Dmitry Petrov

An Eyewitness Account of the Ukrainian Revolution of 2014

Dmitry Petrov cut his teeth in various anti-fascist, anti-authoritarian, and ecological struggles. He traveled to Kyiv to support Ukrainians as they resisted a government that was aligned with the same autocracy that anarchists were fighting in Russia.

What Dmitry saw in Kyiv was by turns exhilarating and disheartening. In his reports, he documents how militarism, nationalism, and hierarchical organization channeled the movement away from the kinds of profound social change that he sought. At the same time, even in the face of fascist threats, he did his best to make a space for anarchist proposals in the Maidan protests.

We have translated Dmitry’s reports from February 2014 because they offer insight into historic events, but also because the questions that Dmitry faced there continue to confront us today.

The invasion would never have been possible if Putin’s regime had not spent the past decade crushing every social movement in Russia—using torture to extract false confessions from arrestees and imprisoning or assassinating countless people. But this is not limited to Russia alone.

Everywhere on earth, governments are relying on more and more repressive and invasive policing to control restless populations. The war in Ukraine is part of a story that is familiar in Syria, Yemen, Ethiopia, Myanmar, Sudan, Palestine, and elsewhere. It represents the same strategy that governments around the world are employing within their territories, expanded to the scale of geopolitics: the recourse to brute force to suppress resistance and extend control.

Wherever we fight against state repression, we are fighting against a future of war.

Good idea: Outlaw security negligence, not security testing

Canadian authorities consider a ban on the infamous "flipper zero" and similar devices to prevent vehicles from being stolen. It is a research tool that can among other things imitate a multitude of different radio signals. It is used to understand interactions of different systems.
Outlawing the flipper tool does not solve the underlying issue that vehicles are insecure enough and can be hacked with very basic measures.

This also raises another issue: people who break some laws tend to break other laws. A ban just takes these tools out of the hands of security researchers as well as the curious minds with no ill intent.

As of two days ago, I've elected to not speak to my parents until they apologize for constantly misgendering and invalidating me and stop doing it. Talking to them about how this is bad doesn't work, they don't listen and double down on the invalidation and the misgendering. I'm trying a new approach.

The incident that caused me to draw a line in the sand and say "no more" was her doing her usual "prove you are a woman" BS and added a new thing to the mix: she asked me to take off my pants and show me her genitals.

Yesterday, she continued to be an idiot and an asshole. She forced me to sit down and listen to her babble for almost half an hour about some bullshit pop-psych bioessentialist garbage she pulled off of Google and refused to let me leave to finish an important task I was working on (that being not leaving her bathroom a mess; it was so tempting to do that, but I'm not that petty). Whenever I stood up to leave, she yelled at me and threatened to hit me.

Today, I told them that I won't tolerate any further attempts to force me to listen to them spouting off nonsense about how my identity is not valid. They interpreted it as a threat, and are discussing the possibility of kicking me out.
