🚫 How do scams with seed phrases work?

As part of our security awareness education series, we have already covered drainers and phishing attacks. Today—another common trick that even experienced users fall for.

What seems like an easy opportunity often turns out to be a trap.

✍️ How it works?

Scammers share seed phrases either publicly or in private chats. Their pitch varies:

• Withdrawal help. Someone asks for help moving funds because they “don’t understand crypto.”

• Leaked seed phrases. Posted on social media or forums, supposedly giving access to “rich” wallets.

• Seed phrase as payment. Instead of sending crypto, they offer a seed phrase from a wallet that supposedly holds the funds.

• Selling seed phrases. They offer you access to a wallet with a large balance—for a small price.

🔍 Where’s the trap?

The user imports the wallet, sees tokens, and tries to withdraw them. However, the transaction fails because there’s not enough gas (like TRX) to cover the fee.

To proceed, the victim decides to top up the wallet’s gas balance with their own funds.

That’s when the trap is triggered: a script detects the deposit and instantly redirects it to another wallet controlled by the scammer.

The funds are gone—blockchain transactions can’t be reversed.

👀 How to protect yourself?

• Never use someone else’s seed phrase.

• Avoid offers that sound too good to be true.

• Always double-check information if something feels wrong.
