💢 Blinken is afraid to label Russia a terrorist state.

The NYT thinks it could force the US to impose sanctions on its allies still doing business with Russia, and destroy the remaining remnants of diplomacy between Washington and Moscow.

Amid outrage over Russia's brutal military campaign in Ukraine, the U.S. Senate unanimously approved a non-binding resolution on Wednesday urging Blinken to name Russia as a sponsor of terrorist attacks in Ukraine, as well as in Chechnya, Georgia and Syria.

But Blinken was noncommittal when asked about it on Thursday, echoing other State Department and White House officials. Any decision must be based on existing legal definitions, he said, and also suggested that this is a contentious issue, since Russia is already under many sanctions. This means that there is simply no practical sense in declaring it a "sponsor of terrorism".
