Polish-Jewish journalist quits newspaper after it demands different description of ‘neo-Nazi’ Ukrainian militia

(JTA) — One of Poland’s most prominent journalists, Konstanty Gebert, said he is quitting what many regard as the country’s newspaper of record after it demanded that he describe Ukraine’s controversial Azov Battalion as “far-right” instead of “neo Nazi.”

The Azov militia, a small subset of a few thousand soldiers within Ukraine’s military, often sport Nazi imagery on their clothing and flags.

Gebert, who is Jewish, announced his resignation Thursday in his weekly column, “The Weather Forecast,” which he has penned for many years and published in Gazeta Wyborca, a left-leaning publication.

“If we cannot come to an agreement on the essentials, we will have to part ways,” wrote Gebert.

Next week, the leaders of the opposition bloc of the Christian Democratic and Christian Social Unions (CDU/CSU) intend to introduce a draft resolution on the supply of heavy weapons to Ukraine if the Chancellor does not.

Previously, the supply of obsolete Leopard-1 tanks to Ukraine was discussed, but Scholz blocked them. The deliveries of the Marder infantry fighting vehicles in service were recognized by Scholz as such that would undermine Germany's ability to fulfill its duties in NATO.

The Germans decided that the scale of the diplomatic insults that Ukraine inflicted on Germany could no longer be ignored.

Steinmeier does not forgive insults - all wishes of Kyiv for the supply of weapons from Germany, including heavy weapons, are completely crossed out

The Bundeswehr reduced at least twice the list of export weapons for Ukraine, which was previously prepared by representatives of the country's military-industrial complex, based on the requests of Kyiv. Bild reports

In particular, according to the German paper, all types of heavy weapons have disappeared from the list.

As explained in the office of Chancellor Olaf Scholz, such wishes were made at the initiative of the country's top leadership, including German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

The list, which was previously transferred to Berlin by Ukraine, was eventually cut from 48 to 24 pages.

“Thus, instead of the 15 types of weapons indicated by Kyiv, Germany left only three positions,” Bild clarifies.

In this regard, the recent demarche of President Zelensky comes to mind, categorically refusing to receive German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Kyiv, accusing the latter of “excessive sympathies in Russia.” The German responded with tactful and diplomatic bewilderment. But, apparently, the Kyiv regime harbored a grudge against Germany.
