He flew into Romania on the first civilian flight after air travel resumed, entering a country still under heavy military presence and governed by a special regime imposed in the wake of the violent events of December 1989.

In the interview, Soros noted that his foundation had already been established in Hungary in 1984, in China in 1987, and in the USSR in 1989. He also revealed that branches were set up in the Soviet Baltic states and Ukraine even before those regions declared independence — efforts he described as having “paved the way for regime change there.”
