Double-Vaccinated in Germany No Longer Allowed to Enter Bars, Restaurants Without Negative SARS-CoV-2 Test

🇩🇪💉@COVID19Up: At a press conference in Berlin on Friday (Jan. 7), German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced that double-vaccinated people would no longer be allowed to enter restaurants and bars nationwide without providing a negative SARS-CoV-2 test.

German federal and state leaders also approved shortening required quarantine or self-isolation periods, which are currently as long as 14 days.

Access to restaurants is now limited to people who are double-vaccinated or considered recovered from COVID-19 who can additionally provide evidence of either a booster shot or a current negative SARS-CoV-2 test.

"It's a strict rule, but it's a necessary one that will help us better control infections [in the future] than is currently the case," Scholz said, defending the measure.

Indian Council of Medical Research Chief Warns of “Major Safety Concerns” With Merck’s Experimental COVID-19 Pill

🇮🇳💊@COVID19Up: Merck's new experimental pill—molnupiravir—has serious safety concerns, and thus has not been included in the national COVID-19 treatment protocol recommended by the health ministry, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) director general Balram Bhargava said on Thursday (Jan. 6).

Indian health officials debated whether to include the drug in the COVID-19 treatment protocol and ultimately decided against it.

“The US has approved it only based on 1,433 patients with a 30% reduction in moderate disease when given in mild cases. However, we have to remember that this drug has major safety concerns. It can cause teratogenicity, mutagenicity, and it can also cause cartilage damage and can also be damaging to muscles,” Bhargava warned.

“More importantly, if this drug is given to a man or a woman, contraception has to be used for three months, as the child conceived during that period may have problems with teratogenic influences. So, it is not included in the national clinical protocol, the WHO has not included it, nor has the UK,” he added.
