🇮🇷 The undersea card: Iran’s new digital leverage over Gulf

🔶 Beyond control of the Strait of Hormuz as an oil chokepoint, Iran has another source of leverage: subsea fiber-optic cables linking Europe, Asia, and the Gulf.

🔶 As the US weighs new strikes, Iran is signaling plans to charge major tech companies for using these cables, reports Iranian media.

🔶 The IRGC already possesses the tools to monitor — or disrupt — these networks, including combat divers, mini-submarines, and underwater drones.

📍 The risks are not theoretical.

In 2024, four submarine cables — AAE-1, Seacom, EIG, and TGN — were severed in the Red Sea after a vessel struck by Houthi militants dragged its anchor across the seabed while sinking.

🔸 25% of internet traffic between Asia, Europe, and the Middle East was disrupted (per HGC Global Communications)

🔸 Providers in India, Pakistan, and East Africa suffered connectivity degradation

🔸 Repairs took weeks & cost billions
