This was Treasury identifying a crypto-enabled laundering rail sitting behind a covert DPRK labor-and-cyber revenue machine.

Treasury said on March 12, 2026 that it sanctioned six individuals and two entities tied to DPRK IT worker fraud schemes that generated nearly $800 million in 2024 for North Korea’s weapons programs. Treasury says the network used stolen identities, fake personas, fraudulent documents, and malware-enabled extortion, with facilitators helping move and convert the proceeds.

The crypto angle is not a side detail. Treasury specifically alleges that one Vietnam-based facilitator, Fakhul Miah, converted about $2.5 million into cryptocurrency for North Korean actors between mid-2023 and mid-2025, including funds tied to the IT worker scheme. Treasury also points to facilitators and companies spanning the DPRK, Vietnam, Laos, and Spain, showing this was a cross-border laundering architecture, not a one-country hustle.

CoinDesk framed it exactly the way it should catch people’s attention: the U.S. sanctioned six people and two companies tied to laundering $800 million in crypto-linked proceeds for North Korea. That headline is basically the public-facing version of Treasury’s bigger point: hostile-state finance is being routed through the same digital labor markets, payment channels, and crypto conversion points that regular businesses use every day.

That’s the real signal.

This is what a state-backed hidden revenue rail looks like:
fake remote workers,

real payroll,
