Who Was Muqbil?
Muqbil was one of the greatest scholars of the Sunnah and ḥadīth of our era, and one of the most influential scholars not only in the history of Yemen, but also of our time.
His full name was Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān Muqbil ibn Hādī ibn Muqbil ibn Qāʾidah al-Hamdānī al-Wādiʿī—may Allāh have abundant mercy upon him.
He was born in the small village of Dammāj in Ṣaʿdah, northern Yemen. After beginning his studies in Yemen in his early thirties, he travelled to Saudi Arabia, studied at the institute of al-Masjid al-Ḥarām in Makkah, and later at the Islamic University of Madīnah. He studied in the Faculty of Uṣūl al-Dīn, also obtained a qualification from the Faculty of Sharīʿah, and then specialised in the science of the Sunnah and ḥadīth.
He eventually returned to the remote village in which he had been born and established Dār al-Ḥadīth in Dammāj.
What happened afterwards was extraordinary.
Students began travelling to this tiny Yemeni village from across Yemen and from countries around the world. Dammāj developed into one of the most important places for Salafī Islamic learning, particularly in the study of ḥadīth. From his students came scholars, teachers, and callers who went on to establish masājid and marākiz of knowledge throughout Yemen, allowing the daʿwah he had cultivated in Dammāj to spread to every corner of Yemen.
Imām Muqbil was not merely a lecturer or public speaker. He was a researcher, author, muḥaddith, and tireless teacher. He dedicated his life to teaching the correct understanding of Islām, free from politics, free from corruption, free from bidʿah (heresy), free from shirk, and free from all other evils.
By his own account, Allāh enabled him to author approximately forty works. Among his most famous are al-Ṣaḥīḥ al-Musnad Mimmā Laysa fī al-Ṣaḥīḥayn, Aḥādīth Muʿallah Ẓāhiruhā al-Ṣiḥḥah, and al-Ṣaḥīḥ al-Musnad min Asbāb al-Nuzūl. His works display his particular devotion to ḥadīth, its narrators, hidden defects, and authentication.
His daily life itself tells you what kind of man he was. He described days filled with researching, reviewing his students’ writings, and teaching works such as Tafsīr Ibn Kathīr, Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, etc. Knowledge was not a side occupation for him—it consumed his life.
He became known for his tremendous attachment to the Sunnah, his defence of Tawḥīd, his opposition to bidʿah, his independence, zuhd (asceticism), courage in speaking what he believed to be the truth, and his extraordinary dedication to teaching and research.
Few people leave behind a legacy that can still be physically seen decades after their death. Imām Muqbil did.
Look across Yemen today and you will find scholars, students, marākiz, and entire chains of students whose scholarly lineage returns to that small village of Dammāj, from him alone.
That is perhaps his greatest achievement after his own knowledge and writings:
He produced men.
He established an environment in which students devoted themselves to the Qurʾān, Sunnah, Arabic, and the sciences of ḥadīth, and Allāh caused the fruits of that effort to spread throughout Yemen and far beyond its borders.
Imām Muqbil died in 1422 AH after a prolonged illness. His funeral prayer was performed in al-Masjid al-Ḥarām in Makkah, and he was buried in al-ʿAdl Cemetery.
May Allāh have abundant mercy upon our Imām, raise his rank, and continue to grow and bless the pure daʿwah he left behind.

This list is not exhaustive; there are more. These are simply those from Ahlus-Sunnah whom Allāh has made easy for us to mention.
Note: Many of Imām Muqbil’s students were refuted for deviating and innovating after his death. The same happened to the students of Imām al-Albānī and others. Therefore, one should not blindly take from someone merely because he was a student of ‘so-and-so’. Each individual should be judged with evidence and justice according to what manhaj he is presently upon. May Allāh grant us to steadfastness upon the truth.

Note: There are others, but these nine are sufficient to understand the bigger names. The rest are generally associated with, influenced by, or promote one or more of them, making it easier to assess where other students stand—and whether knowledge should be taken from them—based on their clear affiliations and allegiances. There is therefore no need to delve into every individual. What matters for the student of knowledge is understanding the foundations of these deviations so he can recognise them himself.

The translated works and teachings of Imām Muqbil — may Allāh have mercy on him.
Imām Muqbil’s Successor
Who succeeded Imām Muqbil ibn Hādī al-Wādiʿī, may Allāh have mercy upon him, after his death?
The clearest answer is found in the words and actions of Imām Muqbil himself:
Shaykh Yaḥyā ibn ʿAlī al-Ḥajūrī, may Allāh preserve him.
Near the end of Imām Muqbil’s life, while he was in Saudi Arabia for treatment, a student of Shaykh Rabīʿ asked him:
“O Shaykh, who is your successor? Who will succeed you in knowledge?”
Imām Muqbil replied:
“Yaḥyā al-Ḥajūrī.”
When the man said that he did not know Shaykh Yaḥyā, Imām Muqbil explained:
“He is the one whom we have now left upon the teaching chair.”
He was then asked:
“Is he the most knowledgeable of them?”
Imām Muqbil replied:
“Yes.”
And this statement was supported by years of practical trust.
Imām Muqbil appointed Shaykh Yaḥyā to deputise for him in his lessons, left him upon his teaching chair when he travelled for treatment, entrusted the students of Dammāj to his care, referred scholarly matters to him, benefited from his writings and research, and repeatedly praised his knowledge of ḥadīth, fiqh and Tawḥīd.
He even instructed that Shaykh Yaḥyā should not step down from the teaching chair unless the people of Dammāj, the tribe and the students were pleased with him doing so.
For more information: A Summary of Shaykh Yaḥyā’s Standing With His Shaykh, Imām Muqbil al-Wādiʿī
https://t.me/scholarsofyemen/2362
The fruits of this choice soon became apparent.
Under Shaykh Yaḥyā’s leadership, Dammāj continued to grow until, by the time the Rāfiḍah oppressed and expelled its people, it had reached around ten thousand male and female students, along with their children—becoming one of the most renowned centres in the world for studying Islām upon the Qurʾān and Sunnah.
After Dammāj was lost and Shaykh Yaḥyā and his students were expelled by the Ḥūthīs, his teaching did not come to an end. He moved to Ṣanʿāʾ, where he established another centre of knowledge and continued teaching his students.
When the Ḥūthīs later entered Ṣanʿāʾ and once again targeted him and his students, he travelled to Saudi Arabia. There, he continued teaching in Makkah until he was granted a masjid from which he could teach and continue spreading knowledge.
When the opportunity arose to return to Yemen, he established another flourishing centre of knowledge in al-Jawbah. Yet once again, the disgraceful Ḥūthīs attacked the Shaykh and his students, forcing them to leave behind what they had built. Shaykh Yaḥyā then moved to Seiyʾūn and began again, resuming his lessons until thousands of students once more gathered around him seeking knowledge.
Thus, the legacy entrusted to him by Imām Muqbil was not confined to preserving a teaching chair in Dammāj. Shaykh Yaḥyā continued carrying that work through repeated displacement, hardship and rebuilding—teaching the Book and the Sunnah, cultivating students of knowledge and establishing centres wherever Allāh facilitated for him.
So when introducing the legacy of Imām Muqbil, one of the foremost figures to know is the student whom he himself selected, trusted and left upon his teaching seat:
Shaykh Yaḥyā al-Ḥajūrī, may Allāh preserve him—his successor in knowledge, the student entrusted with Dammāj after him, and the one who continued that legacy of teaching true Islām long after Dammāj itself was lost.
May Allāh have mercy upon Imām Muqbil and preserve Shaykh Yaḥyā.

Imām Muqbil—may Allāh have mercy on him—said:
“What I advise our brothers with is to strive and work hard in acquiring beneficial knowledge and not to occupy themselves with what does not concern them. This differing and disunity comes from free-time/inactivity; Shaykh Fulan is right and Shaykh Fulan is wrong! Knowledge is not to be sought from Shaykh so-and-so, and Shaykh so-and-so is such-and-such! I say: You must inspire yourself to be like Shaykh Fulan or better.”

“Then I advise students of knowledge to dedicate themselves fully to seeking knowledge and not to pay attention to these matters that are not [important]. Do not busy yourself with fanaticism for so-and-so and fanaticism for so-and-so, but rather turn your attention to seeking knowledge. On one occasion, a brother wrote to me from Makkah and he said to me: Hizbiyyah has become rampant over here, so what should I do? I advised him and said to him: dedicate yourself fully to seeking knowledge and do not pay attention to these matters, and he was aching from their situation and wanted to refute them, so I said to him: Do not busy yourself with refuting them. You are a student of knowledge and you need to increase in knowledge, but if you occupy yourself with this, you will become distracted from memorising the Qur’an and acquiring beneficial knowledge. Do not occupy yourself with this, but rather dedicate yourself fully to acquiring beneficial knowledge.”

“Don't focus on the innovators such that they distract you from seeking knowledge. It's enough to give them a slap on the way (figurative); by releasing a tape, or during the class, etc...Do not busy yourself with them, may Allāh reward you all with good. We are preparing you in order that you become a return point for the Muslims, that you become an author, that you become a caller to Allāh; for this is the role of the Prophets. We are not preparing you only to refute the Ikhwān Al-Muslimūn and those associated with Jamʿiyyah al-Hikmah (a Ḥizbī organisation in Yemen); and who are they for us to even busy ourselves with them?!”

al-Ṣaḥīḥ al-Musnad: A Monumental Work of Ḥadīth
Among the greatest works left behind by Imām Muqbil—may Allāh have mercy on him—is his major ḥadīth compilation:
al-Ṣaḥīḥ al-Musnad Mimmā Laysa fī al-Ṣaḥīḥayn
The Authentic Musnad Collection of That Which Is Not Found in the Two Ṣaḥīḥs.
Its purpose was to gather authentic aḥādīth not found in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī or Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, arranged according to the Companions who narrated them. [1]
To compile it, Imām Muqbil searched through the four Sunan, Musnad Aḥmad, Musnad Abī Yaʿlā, Kashf al-Astār, as well as works of ʿaqīdah and zuhd. He did not simply gather everything he found: he left out narrations he doubted, chains containing disputed narrators, and narrations which outwardly appeared authentic but contained hidden defects. [2]
Imām Muqbil said concerning the effort he put into the work:
“For indeed, I carefully selected from among the aḥādīth [for this work], and I became tired to the utmost degree of tiredness [in compiling it].” [3]
The work contains 1,658 numbered aḥādīth. [4]
This was the extremely thorough work of a muḥaddith: searching major collections, examining chains, scrutinising narrators, identifying hidden defects, and correcting his own work whenever an error became apparent. [2]
The material was later arranged according to fiqh chapters as al-Jāmiʿ al-Ṣaḥīḥ Mimmā Laysa fī al-Ṣaḥīḥayn, which was published in six volumes. [1][2]
For anyone wanting to understand the scholarly legacy of Imām Muqbil, this is one of the most important works through which to know him.
He was not merely a man who called to the Sunnah—he spent his life researching it, teaching it, defending it, and serving its narrations.
May Allāh have abundant mercy upon Imām Muqbil and make this tremendous work heavy in his scale of good deeds.
