Some experts believe that it is better for children to begin learning a foreign language at primary school rather than secondary school. Do the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages?
Band 7.5

It is believed by some experts that children should start learning a foreign language at primary school as doing so in secondary school might be ineffective. While this approach offers some disadvantages, I still believe that benefits – reduced academic difficulty and more effective early learning – outweigh the drawbacks.
One of the drawbacks of teaching children a second language in a primary school is information overload. In a primary school, children start laying foundation in rudimentary stuff like literacy, numeracy, critical thinking, to name a few, and adding a foreign language to the curriculum as a compulsory discipline can be burdensome. For example, a child who begins learning basic things at school like reading, writing, and drawing, and it becomes complicated to combine learning a second language. Thus, school curricula should stay unchanged, as it is difficult for children to absorb so much information altogether, let alone a foreign language.
However worrying above-mentioned statements may seem, I still believe that there are more benefits. One merit of learning a foreign language is reduced academic difficulty. Unlike adults, who are more exposed to exam-oriented classes and preoccupied with choosing a suitable career, making learning languages repetitive and redundant, children have a lot of time learning a foreign language. Besides, when children are exposed to learning a language from an early age, they learn faster, thus, having a competitive edge over those who do know such belt on their waist. It is indispensable to start learning as early and many languages as possible.
In conclusion, even though exposing children to learning a language from an early age might appear worrisome, I believe that benefits are far greater, as children have to learn language in this ever-competitive job market landscape, despite the difficulties of foundational baseline involved.

Some people believe that we should invent a new language for international communication. Do the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages?
Band 8.5
#writingh
There is a view that inventing a completely new language better facilitates international communication. Although a universal language can improve international communication, I believe that practical and cultural drawbacks make such a proposal unrealistic.
One compelling benefit of crafting a new language is equality. English undoubtedly dominates the world, be it trade, culture, tradition or business, thus, the adoption of a universal lingua franca could eliminate all of these cultural biases and the dominance of a certain nation. Another appealing advantage is cross-border communication, as there is a linguistic diversity, it is becoming increasingly difficult for people to interact with each other, simply because of the language barrier. With the integration of a global language, it highly likely improves global intelligibility. Because it will be a universal language, with the intention of crating it with easier grammar, pronunciation, and the like, it highlights how important it will be.
However appealing these suggestions may appear, its drawbacks are far more significant. The biggest problem is impractical implementation. Not everyone will be willing to accept speaking a new language given how many years it takes to learn it. The substantial transition costs are also another issue to deal with when implementing the artificial system. Take Esperanto, for example, a language that has been created with the intention of facilitating a global communication, yet it failed to achieve its goal, because of the mass public resistance and unwillingness to adopt it.
Moreover, in reality, the dominance of existing lingua franca – English – and ever-advancing technology render this proposal largely redundant. Technology, for instance, can provide real-time translation for tourists, diplomats, and presidents, allowing people to speak global communications fluently and without any misunderstandings. In addition, English has become one of the most, if not the important, languages in the world, growing to vast size and astonishing influence. Almost 400 million people speak it as their first language; a billion more know it as a secondary tongue. It is an official language in at least 59 counties, the unofficial language of dozens more. These technological advancements and indispensable role of English highlight why people no need to invent a new language and waste resources.
In conclusion, while some people argue that creating a new language can promote equality and eliminate cultural biases, I still believe that this implementation is impractical as with the advent of technology and given how important English has become in many countries.
