New technologies have changed the way children spend their free time.

Do you think the advantages of this trend outweigh the disadvantages?

In today’s digital era, screens dominate both leisure and learning, considerably altering how children spend their free time. Although technology use by children is not without its drawbacks such as increased risk of obesity and distraction from studies, these drawbacks are far outweighed by significant benefits, including access to educational resources and the provision of easier communication with their peers.

Arguably, the most common issue children have with technology is likelihood of weight gain. Sedentary behaviors associated with prolonged screen time, such as sitting or lying down for extended periods contribute to lack of exercise, resulting in in increased risk of overweight. The more they spend time scrolling the net, the faster they gain extra weight. This not only leads to serious health-related issues such as chronic diseases, cancer or even death, but also to fatigue and low energy levels in children. If it were not for the new technology, many children would have been cheerfully spending their free time with their peers playing in the neighborhood, like in the past. Diverting children’s attention from their studies is another significant disadvantage of new technology. When they use of new technologies, they are likely to neglect to complete the homework assigned by their schools or tutors, spending much time on the internet instead. This often results in low academic performance at school, leading to low grades, frustration, depression and disappointed parents. Therefore, parental involvement plays a pivotal role managing in children’s use of technology.

Despite these downsides, the advantages of technology for children are far greater. One major benefit is that technologies equips children with a wealth of knowledge, whether through social media or networking sites. Apps like Wikipedia or Chat Gpt serve as excellent examples in this case. They provide information on almost any topic children might struggle with, ranging from historical events to the futuristic innovations. The more they use technology, the more valuable information they gain. It is for this reason many parents are giving access to technology for their children, if used wisely.

Another, less subtle yet significant, aspect of technology for children is the provision of avenues to forge friendship, collaborate on projects and engage in shared interests with peers from diverse backgrounds and geographic locations via social media apps or online gaming consoles. Unlike in the past, social media platforms now enables young teenagers to communicate more efficiently. They can interact with their peers regardless off geographical location or cultural background. This can broaden their horizons and helps them stay informed what’s happening around the globe. For instance, Chat Ruletka or Ome TV can play pertinent examples. Many children can speak to strangers through these apps with just few clicks on the screen, strengthening cross-cultural understanding.

In conclusion, the drawbacks of technology use by children including risk of overweightness and distraction from studies. However, the benefits are more significant as they give access to education resources and enables children to interact with their peers more easily.
