Nowadays many people choose to be self-employed, rather than to work for a company or organization.

Why might this be the case?
What could be the disadvantages of being self-employed?

A number of people have chosen to work for themselves whereas others are still working in a company or organization. While there are several factors why many people prefer to be self-employed, it has also a host of drawbacks.

There are two main reasons for choosing to be self-employed. The first one is that people who work for themselves can acquire the freedom to make their own decisions. Instead of following a rigid nine-to-five schedule, they can work during any part of the day. In addition to this, it is possible to completely switch off at weekends, if people work for themselves. Another reason is that being self-employed can also help to earn more money, which enables people to keep the profits after launching their business. For example, some IELTS instructors in my country are deciding to work online or open a new learning center as an alternative to receive a small percentage of payment, their students pay. Thus, a growing number of people prefer to work for themselves.

However, this way of working has clear drawbacks. Setting up a new business requires numerous skills, such as being independent-minded, a good decision maker, a risk-taker, a good communicator. These abilities do not suit everyone, which is why a lot of people are more comfortable in an employee environment. Another major problem is that in order to start up the new business, some people have to take out a loan in the first few years, which is often risky. This is because, if their company has problems, they could lose even their home.

In conclusion, despite having a lot of chances for people who are working themselves, it is better to work for a company or organization for a while before businessmen start their own business because of gaining more experience.
