In many parts of the world, families are smaller today.

Is this a positive or negative development for families and societies?

In recent years, the average family size has shrunk in a number of parts of the globe. In my opinion, this is a change for the worse.

One of the main factors behind reducing the size of family is a lack of supporting team. Fewer family members may have less immediate support during their challenge times, including illness or personal crisis. At this point, the role of the siblings or relatives is too indispensable. In contrast, living in a big family can help to improve self-confidence at any time and anywhere in terms of social life or financial affairs. Moreover, with the interaction of siblings from their childhood, children can be socialized or outgoing, which gives them a lot of benefits. These include getting a job easily or making more friends.

Another major downside of this development is related to labor market effects. A declining birth rate can result in a smaller future workforce, potentially having a negative effect for economic growth. For example, many European countries are currently struggling with a lack of workforce, which is why their government or even private companies offer a high salary for foreign staff. This can also affect the economy of those countries with unqualified workers who prone to make mistakes. Furthermore, aging population is more alarming. This can lead to less efficiency or improvement of a country.

In conclusion, big family size is more significant for both family members and society in terms of improving social interaction among people or their looking after when parents old, and having more workforce for growing of economy.
