🧊Some people think that all university students should study whatever they like. Others believe that they should only be allowed to study subjects that will be useful in the future, such as those related to science and technology.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

People have different views about the subjects students should be allowed to study at university. While it is often said that they ought to be forced into certain key subject areas, others argue that it would be better for everyone to have the freedom to major in any subject they wish.

It is believed by some that universities should only offer subjects that will be useful in the future. They may assert that having many graduates in technology and science would make their country more competitive because scientific and technological fields are the leading industries worldwide. A good illustration of this approach is Germany which has the highest percentage of science and technology graduates in Europe. It is found that German technology companies, including Volkswagen and Siemens, are among the world’s market leaders in medical equipments, industrial automation, and automobiles. This development demonstrates that a focus on science and technology in higher education could lead to higher global competitiveness, more investment opportunities, and therefore economic growth. Nevertheless, I do not think that focusing on boosting scientific and technological outputs is the only way people can benefit society.

There are several reasons why I strongly believe that tertiary students should have the right to study whatever they are interested in. For individuals, if our students are passionate about what they are learning, they tend to get motivated to study, which enables them to persist in their studies, and consequently achieve academically. Another advantage of allowing students to study the course of their choice is that they can choose to major in various other subjects, most of which are just as significant as science and technology. Accountants, lawyers and teachers all play a vital role in modern society, from examining the records of money to advising others in legal matters to educating the next generation. None of these occupations are associated with science and technology, but they are all valuable professions that require a comprehensive education. By neglecting these crucial jobs, it would have a hugely negative impact on the quality of any country’s financial, legal and educational institutions.

In conclusion, although forcing students to study scientific and technological subjects might provide global influence and economic progress, I prefer the educational system where people are free to choose their preferred areas of study as it will greatly benefit both individuals and society in the long run.

🍿Feedback by an expert:
Is "forced" the best verb to use in the introduction? TR - interesting. You provide research data to support the view you disagree with yet all you can do to present your view is make statements that you don't support. So which position is likely to be the most convincing? (even though 'made up' research is not recommended)// CC - excellent. I see nothing that has to be 'penalised'. Why do you think I like the way this is written?// LR - I don't like "forced" in the introduction (although it isn't as noticeable in the conclusion) and I'm going to be strict about "get motivated to study" and "persist in their studies"// GRA - because I've been strict with CC I'll regard " medical equipments" as a slip// So, I'd say: TR -7// CC - 9// LR - 8// GRA - 9// = Overall: 8.0.
