Scientific research should be carried out and controlled by the governments rather than private companies.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

There is a view that governments should be in charge of scientific researches, not privately-owned companies. While this idea seems to be reasonable considering the betterment of people, it may hinder innovation and development in scientific research. Therefore, I would disagree with the viewpoint.

On the one hand, when scientific research is under the control of governments, safety may be better guaranteed. There is a common belief that the main motivation of the state-controlled research is improving the life of people, as opposed to private organizations that are often driven to generate higher revenues. This leads some people to believe that privately-owned companies do not take moral values into account, which, in some cases, turns out to be true. A recent incident with a pharmaceutical company, Quramax, can be a good illustration. Due to the lack of proper working conditions and attentive regulation during research procedures, the medicine produced by this private company did not meet the standards, costing more than hundreds of lives, in turn. Some critics have claimed that such a fatal scenario would have been prevented if the government had been in charge of the research process.

However, I think making governments completely responsible for scientific research is unwise. This practice may hinder innovation and development in science. Despite focusing on income, which seems understandable because of common expenses, private companies also contribute to the overall progress of scientific researches. There can be found thousands of examples that non-governmental organizations have made breakthroughs and lead to numerous innovations. For example, the success of Elon Musk in researching Mars and setting milestone in promoting travel between the planet and the Earth can be cited as good examples. If it were not for his private researching company, these results might not still be present under the management of governments in research.

In conclusion, while I concede scientific researches controlled by governments can prove to be much safer option, I believe this would curb a wider scale of strides made through such researches.
