An increasing number of people choose to have cosmetic surgery in order to improve their appearance.
Why do people want to change the way they look?
Is it a positive or a negative development?
Over the last few years, it has become for many people to have cosmetic surgery operations to have a better look. This could be attributed to social comparison as well as achieving increased self-esteem. In spite of improving exterior appearance of individuals, cosmetic surgeries may still pose some risks, convincing me to regard their popularity as a negative trend.
The main reason for the prevalence of cosmetic surgery could be obtaining greater self-confidence. After such operations as face-lifting, people tend to look more beautiful and attractive, and psychologically, this is reflected in their confidence levels. In a recent study, almost three-quarters of women who have gone through cosmetic surgery operations reported their appearance, coupled with confidence, improved to a great degree. Consequently, they no longer suffered from the concerns as to how they look. If it were not for cosmetic surgery, they would probably continue having embarrassment and relatively lower self-esteem about their appearance.
Another reason seems to be social comparison. Due to the increasing popularity of social media, say Instagram, users often see celebrities with glamorous faces and body shape. When they compare themselves with those famous people, they may realize their appearance is not as attractive. In this case, cosmetic surgery could seem to be an easier and viable option to achieve similar beauty and look, thereby encouraging increasingly more people to use them.
Despite contributing to the overall appearance of individuals, I believe the proliferation of cosmetic surgeries is a negative development. This is because not all such operations are completed successfully, and there is more than 10% likelihood that cosmetic surgeries may end up producing negative and unexpected results. While one such outcome could be a scar on the face or potentially unpleasant look, more worrying concern could be fatal consequences. As an illustration, the death of an Uzbek gym athlete, a 35-year old woman during a cosmetic surgery operation, has gone viral throughout the Internet recently. Fewer other examples could be more terrifying than this incident, which is why I would not see the trend as something positive.
To conclude, the reasons behind the increasing popularity of cosmetic surgeries could be having improved self-confidence and social comparison. However, I still believe this development is negative as the risks involved could be more significant to consider.

The line graph gives data on Australian people being born in different parts of the world, in the UK, Asia and other unmentioned places between 1976 and 2011. Overall, the percentage of the Australians who were born in the UK witnessed a downward trend over the span, whereas quite the opposite pattern was true in the case of Asia and other places. This increase could also be reflected in the total figures, especially during the 1991-2011 period.
Australian people were mostly born in the UK at the beginning with the highest percentage, but over the following decades turned out to be rather negative for this figure. Starting off at just 15%, the rate had showed a noticeable decline to 10% by 1986. This percentage continued declining, albeit not so quick, until the final year, with only 5% of the Australians being born in the UK in 2011.
In Asia, we can see a completely different picture. While only around 3% of Australian people were born in Asia in 1976, this percentage had experienced a gradual growth until the end of the span, reporting 15% in 2011 – the highest record in the chart. Regarding those who were born in other parts of the world, the percentage of them declined to around 7% over the first decade. However, this figure had grown to approximately 14% in 2006, although it fell slightly in 2011.

In the past, people stored knowledge in books. Nowadays, people store knowledge on the Internet.
Do the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages?
Thanks to the strides made in the field of technology, namely the Internet, it has become common for people to upload knowledge on online sources. While this opportunity can be positive in some respects, problems associated with credibility and health may be more significant to consider.
Storing knowledge on the Internet could offer two main benefits. Firstly, it gives easy access. In the past, people used to go to libraries and bookstores when they needed certain information. However, with the presence of the Internet, modern individuals can use online websites for necessary piece of knowledge at anytime and anywhere. The second advantage is unlimited capacity that the global network offers. As opposed to books and libraries with certain number of pages or sources, the Internet offers a huge amount of information available in thousands, if not millions, of websites. This obviously puts online information sources one step ahead of books.
There are, however, some potential disadvantages to storing knowledge on the Internet, which seems to be more important than the benefits above. The main downside is unreliability. It is true that the internet knowledge could be uploaded by literally everyone whether they are qualified in a respective sphere or not. For example, in Wikipedia, it is possible for anyone to create a new information post as well as contribute information to already-existing ones. To illustrate even more clearly, approximately a tenth of the total information available in this global website has been found non-credible. On top of this, it may also cause some health issues. Exposing themselves to screens while looking for and using online sources, people may develop eyesight problems. Therefore, storing knowledge on the Internet may be negative.
In conclusion, uploading knowledge on the Internet can be advantageous due to easy access and enhanced capacity. However, it also presents some drawbacks. Not only can information available on online websites be unreliable, but it may potentially lead to health problems.
