Some people say that music is a good way of bringing people of different cultures and ages together.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion ?

Opinions vary on the role of music in creating social cohesion. In my view, this art form has the potential to bridge the gap between cultures but is less successful at uniting older and younger people.

The main reason why music is an effective method of cementing bonds between different cultures is that it is the planet’s global language. Even though it is true that the lyrics of a song may be incomprehensible because of the language, its melody is universal. Take for example Jung Ji-hoon who is one of the most well-known Korean singers not only in Asia, but also in the western world. Despite not understanding a single word in Korean, many listeners fall in love with his pop songs due to their fun and catchy melodies. With the power to overcome linguistic barriers, his live concerts are usually attended by a broad range of people worldwide. I would argue that no other forms of entertainment can build cross-cultural relationships in this way.

However, I consider that the ability of music to unite the generations is probably limited, even within the same culture. Admittedly, some national occasions where music is a part of the ceremonies can connect all age groups. Nevertheless, I think that in the absence of unifying cultural events, musical preferences are generally divided along generational lines. For instance, in Southeast Asia, a large proportion of old people opt for relaxing musical genres including soft rock, smooth jazz, and classical music. Conversely, in this region, the musical tastes of young people such as hip-hop, rap, and various forms of dance music, are frequently unpopular among the older generations. As a result of varying preferences, the old may struggle to comprehend the music of the young and therefore not be highly appreciative of it. This is more likely to divide age groups than to bring them together.

In conclusion, I believe that, ultimately, although music can act as a powerful means of bringing people of different cultural backgrounds together, it does not have the same effect when it comes to differences in age.
