Archbishop Fulton Sheen on 'Love Thy Neighbor' and the foundations of compassion. (Colored Ver.)
'Love Thy Neighbor' from the Gospel of Matthew, (22:37-39), is often taken out of context and is used to justify many wrongdoing and acts out of ill intention or evils of the enemy. Without proper context, it becomes as if we're meant to love everyone, bleed for everyone, and let others walk over us, which is contradictory to the Bible and it's stance on cowardice.
A short presentation by the American Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen explains the meaning and the context on which the proverb is used, and why it's important to be used in such a manner.

St. Thomas Aquinas chased a prostitute out of his room with a hot iron. His family wasn't very happy about him choosing the religious life, so they kidnapped him and tried to convince him to give it up ultimately culminating in them sending a prostitute to his room to get him to break his vow of chastity and give up on the religious life. He grabbed a hot iron out of the fire, chased her out of the room, and later some of his family helped him escape.
“There is a satanic quality to the French Revolution that distinguishes it from everything we have ever seen or anything we are ever likely to see in the future.” —Joseph de Maistre, Considerations on France
In conclusion, De Maistre was quite the optimist.

I recommend looking into the French Wars of Religion if you want to learn about heretics getting crushed for decades by the Extremely devout and militant Catholic Nobility.
