1454: In the on-going struggle between Islam and Christianity John of Capistrano (aka the Scourge of the jews) called for a crusade against the Turks.
John got his nickname for his itinerant preaching. Like some other Franciscans, he ranged over a broad area on both sides of the Alps, and his preaching to mass open-air congregations often led to pogroms. In 1450 the Franciscan anti-Christ baiter arranged a forced disputation at Rome with Gamaliel called "Synagogæ Romanæ magister". Between 1451 and 1453, his fiery sermons against anti-Christs persuaded many southern German regions to expel their entire anti-Christ population, and in Silesia, then Kingdom of Bohemia, at Wroclaw many were burned at the stake.

April 13 - St Hermenegild, Martyr ~ Dom Prosper Gueranger
MARTYR OF ORTHODOXY. - Today through the palm of a martyr we are shown the mysteries of Easter. Hermenegildo, Visigothic prince immolated by a father obsessed by heresy. The cause of his death was the constancy with which he refused the Easter communion that an Arian bishop wanted to force him to receive from his hands. The martyr knew that the Holy Eucharist is a sign of Catholic union and that it is forbidden to partake of the flesh of the Paschal lamb with those who do not belong to the true Church. A sacrilegious consecration can place the Eucharistic Mysteries in the hands of heretics, if there is a priestly character in the one who has had the audacity to trespass the barrier of the altar of the God of whom he blasphemes; but the Catholic, aware that it is not permitted to pray with heretics, is horrified to see the mystery profaned and remains apart from it so as not to outrage the Redeemer in the very mystery that He established to unite Himself with His angels. The blood of the martyr was fruitful. Spain, held captive by error, broke its chains; a Council of Toledo consummated the reconciliation to which so holy a victim had begun. Sublime and rare spectacle in the history of the world to see a whole nation abjure heresy; but this nation was blessed by heaven. Subjected to the hard test of the Saracen invasion, it triumphed over it by arms, and its faith, then always pure, deserved the noblest of the titles of a people: that of Catholic.
Life. - Hermenegildo was the son of Leovigildo, king of the Visigoths of Spain, and of Teodosia. Associated to the kingdom, like his brother Recaredo, in 573, he took up residence in Seville. There, his wife Ingonda and the bishop San Leandro, determined him to abandon the Arrian heresy and to embrace Catholicism. Being pursued by his father, who remained an Arian, Hermenegild called to his aid the Byzantines: but he thought it con venient to agree to an interview which his father proposed to him, and the latter, having had him imprisoned, tried every means to make him return to heresy. On Easter day of the year 586 the king sent him an Arian bishop to bring him communion. The young man refused: then his father had him beheaded. Saint Hermenegild is the patron saint of the city of Seville. Urban VIII extended his cult to the whole Church.
PRAYER: O Hermenegild, undaunted defender of the truth of the symbol of faith, today we offer you our homage and thanksgiving. Your courageous death showed the love you had for Christ and your contempt for earthly goods teaches us to despise them. Born for the throne, a dungeon serves you here as a mansion and from it you depart for heaven, your forehead girded with the palm of martyrdom, a crown a thousand times more precious than that which was offered to you as the price of a shameful apostasy. Pray for us now; as the Church writes your name in her sacred cycle, she invites you to do so in these days. Easter was your triumphant day; make it for us a true Easter, a complete Resurrection that leads us in your footsteps to the happy mansion where your eyes behold the risen Jesus. Make us firm in our beliefs, docile to the teachings of the Church, enemies of all error and of all novelty. Watch over Spain, your homeland, to whose blood shed in testimony of the true faith it owes so many centuries of pure orthodoxy; preserve it from all claudication so that it may never cease to deserve the noble title that honors it.
