Unlike their Pagan peers, that were pressured to remarry if they became widows and even Augustus fined widows that failed to remarry within two years (without mentioning that, a marriage made them lost any inherent richness provided by their husbands and became the new property of her husband), among Christians, widowhood was highly respected and marriage was mildly discouraged. Christian Widows were enabled to keep their husband’s estate, and the Church supported poor widows, allowing them a choice as to whether or not remarry.

A letter of Cornelius, bishop of Rome in 251, to Bishop Fabius of Antioch, reported that “more than fifteen hundred widows and distressed persons” were in the care of the local congregation, which may have included about 30,000 members at this time.
