ALEXANDRIA, VA—An elderly pedestrian struck by a car in the Landmark area of Alexandria Friday has died of his injuries, police say.

The crash happened around 7:10 p.m. at Stevenson Avenue and Yoakum Parkway. The initial investigation shows the 50-year-old male driver was heading westbound on Stevenson Avenue when he struck two pedestrians crossing the street in the crosswalk. The driver stayed on scene and talked to police.

The victims were taken to the hospital with serious injuries. According to an Alexandria Fire Department dispatch, the victims were unconscious. One of the victims, Habibollah Behzadi, 80, of Alexandria, died of his injuries Sunday, Aug. 13. The other pedestrian, a 76-year-old female Alexandria resident is in the hospital in serious but stable condition.

DJ David Mueller sought $3 million in damages, claiming Swift's assault allegations were false and ruined his career.
ICYMI, Taylor Swift is currently embroiled in a huge, two-pronged legal fight against a radio DJ in Colorado.
It all goes back to a 2013 preconcert meet-and-greet at which Taylor claims DJ David Mueller sexually assaulted her, lifting up her skirt and grabbing her butt. So he sued Taylor for $3 million in damages.

This week, Taylor defended herself on the stand like a badass, and she did not mince words.
Swift said she is not critical of her bodyguard “I’m critical of your client sticking his hand under my skirt and grabbing my ass.

And on Friday night, the judge dismissed the DJ's defamation claim against Taylor.
Judge dismissed Taylor Swift from being sued by Mueller finding there was no evidence her reporting of the groping was improper.

However, her legal fight isn't over yet: She is countersuing the DJ for sexual assault in response to the DJ's own lawsuit. And what's she seeking? $1. That’s right just a single dollar. Because for Taylor, it's not about the money — it's about the principle. Swift's atty said his client is only seeking $1 & to let people know you can say no & that grabbing a women’s rear end is an assault.

"She's just trying to tell people out there that you can say no when someone puts their hand on you," Taylor's attorney said. "Grabbing a woman's rear end is an assault, and it's always wrong. Any woman — rich, poor, famous, or not — is entitled to have that not happen."

Few of us expect much from political leaders: to do otherwise is to invite despair. But to Aung San Suu Kyi we entrusted our hopes. To mention her name was to invoke patience and resilience in the face of suffering, courage and determination in the unyielding struggle for freedom. She was an inspiration to us all.

Friends of mine devoted their working lives to the campaign for her release from the many years of detention imposed by the military dictatorship of Myanmar, and for the restoration of democracy. We celebrated when she was awarded the Nobel peace prize in 1991; when

she was finally released from house arrest in 2010; and when she won the general election in 2015.

None of this is forgotten. Nor are the many cruelties she suffered, including isolation, physical attacks and the junta’s curtailment of her family life. But it is hard to think of any recent political leader by whom such high hopes have been so cruelly betrayed.

By any standards, the treatment of the Rohingya people, a Muslim minority in Myanmar, is repugnant. By the standards Aung San Suu Kyi came to symbolise, it is grotesque. They have been described by the UN as “the world’s most persecuted minority”, a status that has not changed since she took office.

When it comes to obsessional tech habits, photo-taking probably isn’t the worst for relationships. If you’re not gazing into someone’s eyes, at least you’re pointing an iPhone at them. But how does that persistent need to capture the moment — which so many of us feel — change how we actually experience the moment, both in the present and when we try to recall it down the line? The answer is quite illuminating.
“When you take a photo of something, you’re counting on the camera to remember for you,” Henkel said. “You’re basically saying, ‘Okay, I don’t need to think about this any further. The camera’s captured the experience.’ You don’t engage in any of the elaborative or emotional kinds of processing that really would help you remember those experiences, because you’ve outsourced it to your camera.”

5 reasons teaching might not be for you

Teaching can be immensely fulfilling work. The idea of shaping young minds and guiding kids toward their own futures (not to mention having summers off) leads a lot of people into the teaching field. However, not everyone is cut out for this kind of work. The last thing you want is to discover that you aren’t up to the task while standing in front of a class your first day on the job. It’s best to decide whether or not you’re teacher material before even pursuing a degree in education.
Here are 5 issues that may make you decide that teaching is not for you.

1. You're not adaptable.
One plus one will always equal two. The alphabet will always start with A and end with Z. World War II will always begin in 1939. The information you teach may never change, but the way you teach it certainly will. Perhaps your particular administration will demand you rewrite that lesson plan you submitted or the school’s curriculum has changed. Perhaps what works for a class of well-behaved students will not work for an unruly one. A teacher must be able to adapt to any number of predictable and unpredictable situations. If you don’t think you’re sufficiently flexible, then teaching probably isn’t for you.

2. You don’t like homework.
Your students won’t be the only ones who’ll have tons of homework. A teacher’s workday rarely ends at the sound of the bell. There will be papers and tests to grade and lesson plans to prepare. Excited to have your summers off? Well, don’t get too excited, because your summers will be spent doing professional development work and getting ready for the next school year.

3. You are not 100% comfortable with kids.
As they say, kids can be cruel. And they don’t just pick on each other. Students may have it in for their teachers as well, and the monkey-see-monkey-do nature of the classroom may lead good kids to mimic the behavior of the bad ones. Before you know it, your class is out of control and it’s your job to rein it in. Some people have an innate ability to do this. They are natural-born teachers. However, if the thought of playing zookeeper to a room full of squealing, nasty (and perhaps even insulting) young people sounds terrible to you, you may want to choose another career path.

4. You want to get rich.
Do you want to make loads of money? Well, you aren’t going to get rich as a teacher. The average starting salary of a teacher in the U.S. is just $36,000/Year, and teachers can spend hundreds of out-of-pocket dollars on class supplies. That isn't to say that the job is not rewarding in countless other ways, or that the worth of a job is measured by the amount of a paycheck, but if making bank is your ultimate goal you'll unfortunately have to look elsewhere.

5. You can’t deal with parents.
Maybe you love the kids… but the parents? Not so much. This can be a real problem, since a teacher’s job often involves managing parents. When it comes to their children’s educations, parents can get pretty emotional or downright out of control. You might have a mom yelling at you or a dad breaking down in tears. Upping the “ick factor,” a parent might even hit on you. Such situations are tricky to navigate, and you never want to blame the student for a parent’s inappropriate behavior. If you become a teacher because you think kids are a dream and adults are a nightmare, you might be in for an unpleasant surprise when you have to deal with both on a regular basis.

SEVENTY THOUSAND YEARS AGO, HOMO sapiens was still an insignificant animal minding its own business in a corner of Africa. In the following millennia it transformed itself into the master of the entire planet and the terror of the ecosystem. Today it stands on the verge of becoming a god, poised to acquire not only eternal youth, but also the divine abilities of creation and destruction.

Unfortunately, the Sapiens regime on earth has so far produced little that we can be proud of. We have mastered our surroundings, increased food production, built cities, established empires and created far-flung trade networks. But did we decrease the amount of suffering in the world? Time and again, massive increases in human power did not necessarily improve the well-being of individual Sapiens, and usually caused immense misery to other animals.

In the last few decades we have at last made some real progress as far as the human condition is concerned, with the reduction of famine, plague and war. Yet the situation of other animals is deteriorating more rapidly than ever before, and the improvement in the lot of humanity is too recent and fragile to be certain of.

Moreover, despite the astonishing things that humans are capable of doing, we remain unsure of our goals and we seem to be as discontented as ever. We have advanced from canoes to galleys to steamships to space shuttles – but nobody knows where we’re going. We are more powerful than ever before, but have very little idea what to do with all that power. Worse still, humans seem to be more irresponsible than ever. Self-made gods with only the laws of physics to keep us company, we are accountable to no one. We are consequently wreaking havoc on our fellow animals and on the surrounding ecosystem, seeking little more than our own comfort and amusement, yet never finding satisfaction.

Is there anything more dangerous than dissatisfied and irresponsible gods who don’t know what they want?
