Brando's controversial rejection of the award (which no winner has repeated since) remains one of the most powerful moments in Oscar history.

"When they laid down their arms, we murdered them. We lied to them. We cheated them out of their lands. We starved them into signing fraudulent agreements that we called treaties which we never kept. We turned them into beggars on a continent that gave life for as long as life can remember. And by any interpretation of history, however twisted, we did not do right. We were not lawful nor were we just in what we did. For them, we do not have to restore these people, we do not have to live up to some agreements, because it is given to us by virtue of our power to attack the rights of others, to take their property, to take their lives when they are trying to defend their land and liberty, and to make their virtues a crime and our own vices virtues."

'THE GODFATHER'
That Unfinished Oscar Speech
By MARLON BRANDO
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — For 200 years we have said to the Indian people who are fighting for their land, their life, their families and their right to be free: ''Lay down your arms, my friends, and then we will remain together. Only if you lay down your arms, my friends, can we then talk of peace and come to an agreement which will be good for you.''

The loneliness of Princess Leila, June 2001
It symbolizes the disorientation and isolation felt by the millions exiled from a country that desperately needs reform.
The loneliness of Princess Leila, Guardian James Buchan Wednesday June 13, 2001

Princess Leila Pahlavi, daughter of the last Shah of Iran, was found dead in a London hotel room on Sunday. But her death is more than a tragedy for her family, says James Buchan. It symbolizes the disorientation and isolation felt by the millions exiled from a country that desperately needs reform
…..
…..
Leila's death has less to do with politics and more to do with the complex of social realities we know as culture. Modern Iranian life is marked by a terrible symmetry. Iranians in Iran are desperate to leave, while Iranians outside Iran are desperate to return. The exiles have enjoyed worldly success but those who have stayed enjoy Iran, and each group envies the other. "Leila loved Iran," the former empress said on Monday. "She has left us without seeing her country again. Beyond the grief of a mother, this will always be a regret for me that nothing could ever fill." A society united by strong family ties was detonated in 1979. The generations were split apart and scattered all over the world. That, far more than the complexion of the regime in power in Tehran, was the real significance of both Iranian Revolution and the lonely death of Princess Leila.

Sweet Home.. Alabama or whatever..

Retracing roots - the Persian way
By Scott Peterson Christian Science Monitor May 16, 2000 TEHRAN, IRAN

Connect the dots if you will….

......Go West, young man, go West." Horace Greeley's 19th-century mantra echoes luringly in today's Iran: According to some estimates, 1 in 4 Iranians with a college degree works outside the country. Upwards of 1 million Iranians, for instance, have made their residence in the Los Angeles area, prompting the nickname "Tehran-geles," after the Iranian capital. In recent years, poor career prospects and a high rate of unemployment have speeded the flight that began with the 1979 Islamic Revolution. But that is not the only story. A number of educated Iranians are returning to their homeland - especially from America - some after being away for years.

The reason: identity.

….Some of these Iranians have American passports, others have green cards. Most have US degrees, and their thinking - and accents - are often a product of America's melting pot

….But here you are ... getting in touch with your culture. It's better than any PhD."

…."In your life, you need to find an equilibrium inside, and that is easier in Iran," he says. "In the US, many people hunger for this, but most don't find it. They are too busy. Everything in the West is about measurement, how big, and how much money. But this is not the man."

….Coming home to Iran does not work out for everyone, but getting back to the US is not always easy

….Spirit is where you find it, in your heart, wherever you are," says Karimi, philosophically. "I feel more American. No one can convince me otherwise. Going back to the US is something I want to do."

….I have thought about going back 100 times

…I really felt a thirst for my country, and I am still trying to satisfy that thirst.

<Delusion Illusion Hallucination Mirage>
Mean something that is believed to be true or real but that is actually false or unreal.

Delusion implies an inability to distinguish between what is real and what only seems to be real, often as the result of a disordered state of mind <delusions of persecution>.

Illusion implies a false ascribing of reality based on what one sees or imagines <an illusion of safety>.

Hallucination implies impressions that are the product of disordered senses, as because of mental illness or drugs <suffered from terrifying hallucinations>.

Mirage in its extended sense applies to an illusory vision, dream, hope, or aim <claimed a balanced budget is a mirage>.
