The wolves were needed to control the population of elk and deer..

--1988: The big Yellowstone fire got out of hand, Park was closed to millions of visitors.
Being a Park employee for four Summers, 1985 to 1988; and studying at the nearby Montana State University, taught many many lessons in regard to wildlife management.
Now, 35 years later, the wolves are back, the deer and elk population is under control.
The Forrest is alive and healthy; the big 1988 fire acted as a cleanser. So most of the dead and sick trees, acting as fuel to fire spreading, are gone. The Forrest should be safe and protected against little fires for many years.
