Disappointed about decision regarding AI

Hey. I’ve been following this sub for a while but I’ve never actually had a Reddit account. Recently, I saw the moderator post regarding how AI will not be banned on the sub. While the decision is entirely up to the moderators, I am personally disappointed and see others sharing this disappointment.

First off, I find it frankly ridiculous that one of the main reasons for not banning AI is the fact that “every popular mod is using it” is being used as an excuse. Yes, good content can be made with AI assistance. However, much of AI steals from other artists and mod developers in a way I find unfair. People who are unwilling to work on parts of their mod, or the entire mod, are stealing from people who put effort into their work and grinding it up in a Frankenstein’s monster of code. If you rely on stealing art or code from others because lack of effort, why should I play your mod?

Additionally, entirely “vibe coded” mods are even worse. They definitely should be classified as low effort, because at that point you aren’t even making art for fun. Seriously what is the purpose of making a mod if an AI agent is making it all? Is it engagement or monetization? If so that definitely constitutes being low effort. For people who use AI because they want to see their idea come to life, I encourage that you learn how to program or ask others for help. You don’t need a lot of available time to learn how to program, and learning can definitely bring your idea to life more than AI ever can do.

What is currently going on

I know that this is a result of a long, long series of dominoes that in a way, I'm a large part responsible for. I want to explain the whole situation so this doesn't become pointless arguing. Change needs to happen, and I don't care in what way this pushes it.

My tone is likely annoyed for parts of this; please do not take that as a sign to ignore what is actually going on.

Basically everyone is angry at this situation for one reason or another. The reason why the majority are angry, however, is due to how the situation has been handled from the start.

This is my timeline of events starting from the beginning. Please do not post your opinion until you have read this. If you don't want to read this, then just ignore it.

I will state the prevailing opinions (i.e. top comments) only, so I don't bias this too much. Parts where I go off a bit are when objective modding authorities have made their stance/actions on this clear (Curseforge AND Modrinth)

# The start:

This all started most likely when this post became popular. There was an increasing amount of AI mods appearing on this subreddit, so the response made sense.

I, for one, called out my first AI generated mod, mainly because it configured remotely configured clients in an extremely insecure way, on a server that had NO API AUTHENTICATION(!). This would have resulted in an inevitable data breach, and is something had forced the 'selfhosted' sub to change.

The (seemingly only active) moderator replied neutrally, stating that they did not know how this situation could be handled equitably. People provided solutions but nothing really seemed to happen, and the post lost traction.

# The part where I get involved:

I found a blatantly AI generated post about some mod which just threw DOOM items and another mod together.

The poster was weirdly defensive about AI use and argued that there wasn't any at all. Additionally, many were claiming their worlds were corrupted by this mod (you'll understand how this happened soon).

Initially, I looked through the source code and found a literal plaintext JS file that was full of symbols you could not type on any standard keyboard, and that no IDE would give to you (stuff like emdashes). No developer sticks their pinky out to document near every self-explanatory line and type em-dashes everywhere in a closed-source mod.

There was also this dumb 'defense system' which was a bunch of... 'js pretending to be mixins?' to prevent players from being unkillable, using commands, etc.

I posted about it and the person kept claiming they didn't use AI.

I have literally no idea why, but I dug deeper. They had some weird 'java runtime agent' listed on their mod page, which they described as being optional. They, however, didn't mention the other 'agent', which was a self-extracting .JAR file which then executed its contents and essentially escaped the game's JVM.

From here it would them extract a .DLL inside of that same .JAR, and execute arbitrary code on the user's computer. This code tried to actively erase memory from other mods that tried to touch things it blocked, and invariably lead to irreversible corruption. And did I mention they published another mod that did this exact thing.

This behaviour is malware, as it is done expressly to harm the user, in this case because they decided to install other mods. After reporting this to Modrinth, both malicious mods were removed from their platform after totalling over 600 downloads.

This isn't something that a regular dev would have written, nor would a script kiddie have been able to. AI uniquely created a situation where malicious code was propagated through a vibecoded project, which Google
has reported more instances of recently.

# The Response

This post got pretty popular. It even got the attention of Curseforge staff in the comments, surprisingly.

After all this, me messaging the mod team, and some more boring stuff, they made A post about AI. They essentially said that 'this would be too hard to police, and AI has its uses anyways', which was NOT what the prevailing demands were for AI rules.

They got massively downvoted and decided to unpin (and possibly delete) this post.

I can't find it in my comment history, and the screenshots are in subreddits I cannot share here, so you'll have to take my word for it unfortunately.

# '1984'

a few people will know why I titled it this on a period so many weeks ago.

the subbreddit immediately broke down. With no rule to establish order, could you really expect anything else?

Things happened which I can't talk about if I want to keep this post up, but there was a lot of arguing happening. It boiled down, but there was still a lot of division.

The eventually culminated in a comment on an AI generated Create addon that expressed disappointment being removed by a moderator.

This caused an exodus of some the meme sub, mainly because the group against AI they had now viewed themselves as being no longer welcome on this sub.

On some level the amount of content being posted became more AI-oriented, and I personally worked on non-minecraft things because of the drama. What happened in the weeks between now and then I am not too sure of. Clearly it wasn't good.

# 1984.

Today, someone posted something called 'Disappointed about decision regarding AI'. It got deleted. It clearly had not violated any rules; Discussion posts are actively allowed- but it mattered not, it seems, for the post was deleted on nonexistent grounds.

Someone posted in jest, '1984'. That too was deleted. This act of censorship understandably angered a lot of people, so they kept making more, and more, and more posts copying it.

Attempting to stop this will not work out, you have to reconcile with people in some way instead of being mad about it.

Currently your invisible rule is: 'Criticism of AI, for any possible reason, is banned'.

Write it.

Create GENUINELY makes me sick

I don't mean this like "I'm tired of it", or "It's in every modpack, I hate it" no it makes me actually physically sick, makes me dizzy, gives me a headache and forces me to step away from my PC and lay down for 30 minutes. WTF are they putting in it.
