Good instinct to ask before you build them — the layer you choose affects speed and how easy they are to manage.

Short answer: CDN/edge for big domain moves, server config (Nginx/.htaccess) for everything else, app-level only as a last resort.

Long answer:
Edge redirects (Cloudflare Rules, etc.) fire before the request hits your server — fastest, and they survive even if origin is down. Best for whole-domain migrations.

Nginx is faster than .htaccess (which Apache re-reads per request) and handles regex maps cleanly for thousands of URLs. .htaccess is fine for smaller sites and quick edits without a reload.

Avoid PHP/app-level redirects for migrations — they're the slowest and add a redundant hop.

Next step: if you have over a few hundred rules, build a regex map in Nginx rather than line-by-line redirects.

If old and new URLs share a clean pattern (same slug, different path), a spreadsheet join is instant and 100% accurate — pull both lists, match on slug, done.

When slugs were rewritten, exact match fails. That's where fuzzy tools earn their keep: Screaming Frog's bulk export plus a similarity match, or scripts that compare page titles/H1s/content rather than URLs. They suggest the best new home for each old page.

The rule: never let fuzzy-matching auto-publish. It guesses — a human approves the top 20% of pages (your traffic-drivers) manually.

Next step: split your list into 'pattern matches' and 'rewrites', spreadsheet the first, fuzzy-match the second.

Next step: pull 'top pages' from GSC and 'best by links' from your backlink tool, merge, dedupe, and confirm every URL redirects.

This worries a lot of people because the migration itself is identical work — the difference is what happens after.

Short answer: subfolder usually consolidates authority better and is the lower-risk migration target.

Long answer:
Google treats subdomains as somewhat separate properties. A subfolder more clearly inherits the main domain's authority, which is why many sites moving for SEO go subdomain to subfolder.

The migration mechanics are the same — 301 each old URL to its new home, update internal links, resubmit sitemaps. The catch with subdomains: you maintain separate GSC properties and sometimes separate analytics, which makes tracking the migration messier.

Don't move just because 'subfolders are better' — if your blog is on a different CMS or team, the operational cost can outweigh the SEO gain.

Next step: if consolidating authority is the goal, plan a subdomain-to-subfolder move with full per-URL 301 mapping.

Q: I inherited a site with no URL list and need every old page to redirect. Where do I get the list?

Classic nightmare handoff — but there are several sources, and combining them beats any single one.

Short answer: start with Search Console export, fill gaps with the Wayback Machine and server logs.

Long answer:
GSC's Pages export is your richest source if you have access — it lists URLs Google indexed. No access? The Wayback Machine (web.archive.org) has a CDX API that dumps every URL it ever archived for a domain — surprisingly complete for older sites.

Server access logs catch anything still being requested today, including long-tail pages neither tool remembers. Old XML sitemaps in your repo or backups are a fourth source.

The goal is a deduped master list before you build a single redirect.

Next step: query the Wayback CDX API for the domain, merge with GSC and log URLs, then dedupe into one mapping sheet.

Very important to get right — picking wrong here can deindex your live site on launch day.

Short answer: protect staging with HTTP auth (password), not robots.txt or noindex.

Long answer:
robots.txt 'Disallow' blocks crawling but not indexing — Google can still list the URL. Worse, if a noindex tag is on the page, a robots block prevents Google from ever seeing that tag.

Meta noindex works on staging — but the real danger is forgetting to remove it at launch. Plenty of traffic disasters trace to a noindex shipped to production.

HTTP basic auth sidesteps both: bots can't reach the site at all, and there's no tag to accidentally carry over.

Next step: put staging behind a password, and add a launch-checklist item to grep your live templates for stray 'noindex' before go-live.
