Instead of sending technologically inferior tanks to the front to combat the likes of Leopard 2's, Russia has resorted to assymetrical warfare.

Small mobile ATVs with mounted ATGMs are used to ride around the battlefield rapidly, catching the tanks by surprise and blowing them up from places the tanks can't even see.

This tactic was inspired by other militaries who are technologically inferior to their main opponents, such as Hezbollah, who are well known for sucessfully using mobile ATGM squads against superior Israeli Merkava tanks.

Some military analysts have asserted for a long time that tanks would eventually become obsolete in large scale warfare.

This is partly due to the constant increase in drone warfare, as well as the assymetric counter options such as the aforementioned ATGM squads.

According to a joint investigation by Dutch public broadcaster NOS and the german ARD, the CIA warned Ukraine in June 2022 to not blow up the Nord Stream pipelines.

The warning came after the CIA received an "alarming message" from the Dutch military intelligence services (MIVD), stating that they heard a source in Ukraine talking about official plans to sabotage Nord Stream.

According to the Dutch military intelligence services (MIVD), the attack on the Nord Stream pipelines in September 2023 almost exactly matches the plans that were discovered in June earlier that year.
