Trump had briefly told the Pentagon to prepare a large strike package for dealing with the Houthis, after a personal appeal from Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Most of the President’s inner circle opposed opening another front in the Middle East, citing energy insecurity and overextension. In the end, Trump decided against ordering the strikes just moments before they began.
