๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ช Major Pipeline projects and coup d'รฉtat in Niger

Since the coup in Niger took place, many Western and African nations stared to voice their concern regarding many things: uranium and other resources import from Niger, airspace closure and elongated fly time to and from some countries in different parts of Africa, threat of a second Great war of Africa and deterioration of situation with terrorism, etc.

๐Ÿ”ปOne of such concerns was voiced regarding the major oil and gas pipeline projects that cross the Nigerien territory or start there. Such major projects are Niger-Benin oil pipeline, Niger-Chad oil pipeline (that connects to the Chad-Cameroon pipeline) and Trans-Saharan gas pipeline. ECOWAS and Western nations were first to voice their concerns with the fate of these projects.

However, just like with the uranium (which continues to be exported from Niger and companies like Orano continue their work in the republic) the situation with pipelines remains the same no matter the coup.

โ–ช๏ธWith Niger-Benin pipeline everything is clear. The Benin government itself told that Niger-Benin oil pipeline is not impacted by sanctions, the projects was not abandoned and is still under construction. The most recent news indicate that the pipeline is ready for 75% and should be finished soon.

โ–ช๏ธThe situation with Niger-Chad and Trans-Saharan pipelines is different. Many western outlets started to cry that projects are under threat of being canceled. Which is funny, because even before the coup the fate of these projects was a mystery.

The Niger-Chad pipeline is presumed to be shelved, because there were no news since 2019. And in 2019 Chad authorities informed that the project, most likely, was stopped in favour of Niger-Benin pipeline. The official explanation given for the project's "cancellation" was concerns about attacks by Boko Haram in the Lake Chad area.

With the Trans-Saharan gas pipeline the situation almost the same, except that the project was and is in work. The idea of the Trans-Saharan pipeline was first proposed in the 1970s. In 2000s the preparations to build it began. However latest news are from autumn of 2022. And they were about the singing of memorandum of understanding between Nigeria, Niger and Algeria. So the project remained quite vague even before the coup. And there's no confirmation of its cancelation.

๐Ÿ”ปAll in all, these "concerns" about the major pipeline projects are just another attempt to pressure Niger's military authorities to take a more favorable position in the international relations in order to bargain for better terms with the junta.

The same as with the situation with "invasion" or concerns of toppled president Bazoum's health.

๐Ÿ’ฐ๐Ÿช– Western weapons manufacturers are popping champagne corks over record sales with total revenues hitting $400 billion for last year. According to media reports, this coming year-end will see that record figure exceeded by another salivating $50 billion.
Ukraine may be resembling a bloodbath, as we noted in last weekโ€™s editorial. But apparently, Western military corporations are swimming in a bonanza of profits and stock market investments.

Most of this lucrative new business stems from NATOโ€™s proxy war with Russia in Ukraine, which is heading toward its second year. There is no sign of a diplomatic effort from the West or the Kiev regime it sponsors to end the bloodshed.

The main corporate beneficiaries making a financial killing from Ukraine are by far the American firms. They include such behemoths as Lockheed Martin, Boeing and RTX (formerly Raytheon). But also enjoying soaring profits are arms makers in other NATO countries: BAE in the United Kingdom, Airbus in France, Netherlands and Spain, Leonardo in Italy, and Germanyโ€™s Rheinmetall.

This week the Joe Biden administration requested another $24 billion in U.S. taxpayer-funded aid to Ukraine. Itโ€™s hard to keep track of the money flowing from NATO countries to prop up the Nazi regime in Kiev. Even the NATO authorities donโ€™t seem to know the precise figures, such is the rampant corruption that is inevitably associated with the vast doling of funds. But estimates of total U.S. and NATO aid to Ukraine range from $150 billion to $200 billion over the past year alone.

Western capitalism is at once a sponsor and an addict of war ๐Ÿ›‘

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ช Ghana opposition is against invasion plans

Opposition lawmakers in Ghana have expressed concern over the Ecowas plans to potentially launch military action in Niger as part of efforts to restore constitutional order in the country. The lawmakers are demanding Ghanaโ€™s President Nana Akufo-Addo to immediately stop all preparatory mobilisation towards deploying Ghanaian soldiers.

President Akufo-Addo doesn't have a mandate from the Ghanaian people in this matter. We do not believe a military intervention is the way forward,โ€ Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, a member of parliamentโ€™s foreign affairs committee told.

The countryโ€™s minority lawmakers hold the view that diplomacy and constructive dialogue should be explored.

โ€œGhana's gallant soldiers must be kept far away from the looming bloodbath and escalating geopolitical confrontation which is bound to explode with far-reaching consequences for stability in an already volatile region,โ€ Ablakwa said.

๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช 50,000 companies have closed due to insufficient funds

Over the first half of the year, 50.6 thousand German companies have already gone bankrupt, Zeit Online reported.

This is about 12% more than the same period last year.

In recent years, government aid has partially contained the surge in bankruptcies caused by the pandemic and the energy crisis. But analysts expect the situation will only worsen from here.

How are those sanctions going? When are the new ones?

๐Ÿ”นGerman ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช media warns about decoupling from China ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณ as it would be more dangerous than beneficial for the EU ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ. Even with a shift away from China, Europe would still be dependent on rare-earth element (REE) imports from places like Africa. As much as 90% of Europe's rare earths are imported from China.

๐Ÿ”นChina controls 60% of global production of REE and 85% of the processing capacity. China is considering banning the export of technologies used to produce high-performance rare earth magnets ๐Ÿงฒ citing โ€œnational securityโ€. Mining โ› REEs causes various types of environmental damage including radioactive waste because of how they are extracted. Processing centres are concentrated largely in China due to special know-how, high costs for processing plants ๐Ÿญ & operations.

๐Ÿ”นAfrica as a continent can outmatch both China and the West by formulating a new strategic approach towards the REE industry by developing a sound mineral policy through inter-state cooperation in order to get geopolitical leverage in the global mineral market.

๐Ÿ”นAfrican states involved in the REE sector need to consider:

๐Ÿ”ธStrengthening tax policy to maximize revenue collection.
๐Ÿ”ธLeveraging the African Continental Free Trade Area to maximise value addition.
๐Ÿ”ธUsing resources strategically to build strong trade partnerships.

๐Ÿ”นBangladesh ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ฉ Foreign Minister A.K. Abdul Momen reveals the country's aspirations of becoming a BRICS member. He revealed this after a meeting between Bangladesh's Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and South African ๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ President Cyril Ramaphosa in Geneva๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ญ. Bangladesh is already a member of the BRICS New Development Bank since 2021.

๐Ÿ”นPM ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ฉ Hasina will attend the BRICS leadersโ€™ summit scheduled to take place in South Africa in August. However, Bangladesh is not presently a Dialogue Partner as other BRICS member applicants such as Egypt, Saudi Arabia and UAE. The country will use this move to diversify foreign relations and reduce the dominance of the US and the US dollar.

๐Ÿ”นWashington ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ previously warned it would slap visa โœˆ๏ธ restrictions on Bangladeshi citizens who undermine the democratic election process at home. ๐Ÿ”นIndia ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณis considering imposing an export ban on four key metals; lithium, beryllium, niobium, and tantalum because of their importance in powering sectors critical to national security and technological advancements. Indiaโ€™s Parliament also passed the Mines and Minerals Amendment Bill, which will allow commercial mining โ›in India, of titanium and zirconium addition to the previous mentioned metals. The Bill now awaits the Presidentโ€™s assent.

๐Ÿ”นIndia discovered a large lithium deposit near Kashmir, this year but is about a decade away from final production. Iran ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ท discovered its first lithium ore deposit in March, making it the world's 2nd largest reserve. Australia ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ has identified at least five mines of of lithium and cobalt for Indian entities to participate in exploration/production. India is discussing the possibility of FTAs with Lithium Triangle countries Peru ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ช and Chile.

๐Ÿ”นA coalition of US ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ tech giants has also protested the abrupt way in which India introduced tech import restrictions this month. The restriction requires Indian companies to get a license before importing PCs, laptops, or servers in hopes of boosting domestic tech production as more countries try to have less dependence on China's ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณ dominance of critical sectors.

๐Ÿ”นMore than 50 companies from around the world are jostling to negotiate lithium deals under the Chilean ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฑ gov't's new plan to have the state take a majority stake in the lithium ๐Ÿ”‹industry where the state would take a controlling interest in each partnership. Mexico ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ฝ is also reviewing foreign companies that have active mining concessions, with plans to follow in Chile's footsteps.

๐Ÿ”นSaudi Arabiaโ€™s ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฆ US Treasury holdings fell to a more than six-year low in June. Saudi Arabia, the largest Middle East holder of US gov't debt, sold more than $3 billion of its shares in June. This brought down Riyadh's total holdings to $108.1 billion, the lowest since December 2016. The Saudi sovereign wealth fundโ€™s disclosed holdings of US ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ-traded stocks rose almost 10% in value to about $39 billion in the second quarter.

๐Ÿ”นHistorically Saudi Arabia used to keep most of its reserves in US Treasuries ๐Ÿ’ต, but with the countryโ€™s diversification strategy Vision 2030 backed by the countryโ€™s sovereign wealth fund results in investments being redirected domestically. Oil revenues, are fueling these projects.

๐Ÿ”นSaudi Arabia's cut in oil ๐Ÿ›ข production through OPEC has hindered the US from re-filling its Strategic Petroleum Reserve as oil prices have increased. Closer ties between China and the Middle East have raised concerns in Washington DC ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ and European ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ capitals after Saudi Arabia signed $10 billion worth of investment agreements with Chinese ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณcompanies in June.

๐Ÿ”นThe UAE ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ช offloaded $4 billion worth of US treasury bonds in June, making it the second consecutive month the country sold US government debt. Its holding fell to $65.2 billion from $69 billion in May 2023. Kuwait ๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ผ shares of the US debt instrument fell to $40.6 billion in June from $41.4 billion in May. However, much this was off-set by Japan ๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ต increasing US Treasury purchases for June.

๐Ÿ”นChina ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณ, the second-biggest holder of US debt, has reduced its stake to the lowest level in more than 14 years. It now holds about $850 billion of US debt, lower than its all-time high of over $1.2 trillion.
