This series focuses on Polkadot! For fans of this innovative blockchain I have sourced the following information! 👇😏
Guide to Polkadot ParaChain Auction:
Polkadot is a blockchcain network that aims to unite/ connect multiple blockchains to ensure smooth communication between them.To achieve this it uses what is known as a parachain.
Parachain is derived from the word parallel chain and it refers to those blockchains that are connected to Polkadot and run parallel to the Polkadot relay chain.
To paint a good picture of this, think of a ceiling fan. The motor of the fan is linked to the relay chain and the blades are linked to the parachains.
WHY PARACHAINS?
Parachains are beneficial for the following reasons:
1. They give flexibility to projects built on the polkadot blockchain as they can have their design, native token, transaction fees, governance and process, be built from their specific development platforms.
2. While other blockchains are waiting to launch scalability at layer2, Polkadot achieves scalability at layer 1 as parachains allow transactions to be spread out and transact faster.
3. Parachains provide projects with full control to blockchain communication and allows them to engage with other parachains and external networks.
4. Polkadot parachains are free to adopt any governance model of their choice.
POLKADOT AUCTION:
For blockchain projects to secure a slot in the Polkadot parachain, they will have to participate in an auction.
These slots are assigned by an on-chain auction and the winners will lock up a bond in $DOT for the duration of the lease.
Here is how the auction works:
1. Bonding:
Here, the parachain teams agree to bond a portion of $DOT tokens for the duration of the lease and these bonded $DOT cannot be used for another purpose.
2. Auction Cost:
After the lease, the full amount of $DOT bonded is unlocked.
3. Crowd loans:
Parachain teams can choose to participate in the auction bid by creating a crowdloaning campaign where $DOT holders contribute their $DOT and get rewarded by the team. This $DOT contributed will be given back to a contributor in full at the end of the lease.
4. Auction Duration:
The auction is facilitated by the open bidding system and it lasts for approximately 1 week.
5. Slot Duration and Lease Periods:
Each slot can be leased for a maximum of 96weeks although; parachains can choose their desired slot duration. Also, multiple parachains can win a single auction if the bidding on a non-overlapping lease period is successful.
The winner of the recently-concluded auction which started on the 11th of November 2021 and ended on the 18th of November is Acala.
The next auction is scheduled to be held on the 23rd of December 2021.
